Chania with lighthouse, mosque, venetian shipyards, Crete, Greece.
Shona Michell 14th October 2026

The Mediterranean is one of the most rewarding places in the world to cruise, and one of the most varied, with sunshine, picturesque coastlines, historic cities and beautiful islands drawing visitors throughout the year. In this guide, we’ll take a closer look at what you can expect during the year, so you can choose a Mediterranean cruise that’s right for you.

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean

There is no specific best month to cruise the Mediterranean – it depends on what matters most to you.

  • May–June and September–October: warm rather than hot, generally calm seas and ports that are busy but not overwhelming
  • July–August: the hottest weather and the warmest sea, alongside the busiest ports
  • March–April and November onwards: the quietest ports and often the best value, with cooler, more changeable weather

The Mediterranean cruise season at a glance

This table shows each part of the year, so you can compare weather, sea temperature, crowds and price, and see who they are best suited to.

Time of year Average air temperature Average sea temperature Crowds Price Best suited to
March-April 15–19°C 11–16°C Light Good value Culture lovers, city sightseeing, spring blooms
May-June 21–29°C 17–22°C Moderate, building throughout June Mid-range, rising in late June Everyone - sightseeing in comfortable warmth
July-August 28–32°C 23–26°C Busiest Highest Sun-seekers and swimmers, families tied to school holidays
September-October 22–28°C 20–24°C Easing after the UK schools return Mid-range, falling through October Warm seas with fewer people, comfortable sightseeing
November-February 12–18°C 10–19°C Very light Often the best value City breaks, quiet ports, travellers who don’t mind changeable weather

The temperatures shown are intended as a helpful guide. Air temperatures are based on average daily highs for Barcelona, Rome and Athens, while sea temperatures reflect monthly averages for Barcelona, Athens and Venice. Weather and sea conditions can vary from port to port, and different sources may show slight differences of a degree or two.

Month-by-month guide to cruising the Mediterranean

The main Mediterranean cruise season generally starts in spring and runs through to autumn, with a smaller number of sailings in winter.

Our Mediterranean cruises from the UK take you to some of the region's most beautiful destinations, including the South of France and the picturesque Amalfi Coast, or you can choose to join one of our Fly Cruises, with a dedicated flight transporting you directly to warmer climes, allowing you to spend more time enjoying each port of call.

March and April

March and April are a good time to cruise the Mediterranean if you prefer milder days and quieter ports than the summer heat. As the cruising season begins, there's a fresh, unhurried feel to the region that's perfect for exploring and discovering its cities and coastlines.

  • Weather: In March, you can expect daytime highs of around 16°C, while April usually brings pleasant temperatures of around 18–19°C, along with plenty of sunny spells. It's still early in the season, though, so a light jacket and a few extra layers will come in handy for cooler days and evenings when out on deck.
  • Sea: The sea is still on the cool side at around 11–16°C, so this is generally the time of year for exploring ashore rather than swimming. You may also find the sea a little livelier than during the summer months.
  • Crowds: Crowds are typically light, making it easier to explore historic sites, wander around old towns and enjoy a drink at a waterfront café at a relaxed pace. Do bear in mind that some seasonal attractions may not have opened for the year just yet.
  • Highlights: Spring brings colourful wildflowers, fresh green landscapes and comfortable temperatures for sightseeing, whether you're exploring ancient ruins, charming old towns or scenic hilltop villages.

May

May is often considered one of the best months to visit the Mediterranean. The weather is warm rather than hot, the sea is usually calmer and the busiest summer crowds are still a few weeks away, making it ideal for spending time ashore exploring.

  • Weather: Daytime temperatures typically reach 21–24°C, making it comfortable to spend a full day exploring, whether you're browsing local markets or enjoying an alfresco lunch.
  • Sea: Sea temperatures are usually around 17–18°C. While it's still a little fresh for a swim, it's pleasant for sitting by the water or dipping your toes in.
  • Crowds: Ports tend to be quieter than during the height of summer, creating a more relaxed atmosphere both ashore and at popular attractions.
  • Highlights: With long, sunny days and seasonal attractions open, May is the perfect time to visit. From ancient landmarks and bustling markets to charming old towns, you'll have plenty of opportunities to explore at a comfortable pace.

June

June is a wonderful time to cruise the Mediterranean if you're looking for long, sunny days and warmer seas. Summer is beginning to settle in, bringing plenty of sunshine and pleasant temperatures, but without the peak-season crowds and heat of July and August.

  • Weather: Daytime temperatures typically reach around 25–29°C, with long sunny days and very little rainfall, making it ideal for spending time ashore.
  • Sea: Sea temperatures are usually around 20–22°C. While it can still feel refreshing at the start of the month, it’s generally warm enough for swimming, particularly as you move through the month.
  • Crowds: Ports are often busier than in spring but still feel more relaxed than during the height of summer.
  • Highlights: If you're hoping to combine explorations with spending time on the beach, June offers a balance of long, light-filled evenings, lively waterfronts and plenty of opportunities to discover the Mediterrnean’s coastline. Earlier sailings are a great choice for enjoying warmer weather before visitor numbers begin to rise.

July-August

July and August

July and August are ideal if you're looking for long, sunny days and the warmest sea temperatures of the year. As the Mediterranean reaches its peak summer season, you'll find bustling waterfronts, sunshine, and ideal conditions for spending time by the sea.

  • Weather: Daytime temperatures typically reach 28–32°C and can feel even warmer inland. While coastal destinations often benefit from cooling sea breezes, it's usually more comfortable to explore during the morning or later in the afternoon.
  • Sea: With sea temperatures of around 23–26°C, this is one of the best times of year for swimming and making the most of the Mediterranean's beaches and coastline.
  • Crowds: This is the busiest time of year to visit, particularly during the school holidays. Popular attractions can be busier, but the atmosphere is often lively and energetic.
  • Highlights: Long, sun-filled days, warm evenings and ample opportunities to spend time by the sea, whether that's relaxing on the beach or simply enjoying the coastal scenery.

Tips for exploring comfortably in summer: During the height of summer, it's worth making the most of the cooler parts of the day. Setting out early allows you to enjoy exploring before temperatures rise, while the warmest hours are often best spent over a leisurely lunch, discovering a site of interest or relaxing back on board your ship. Don't forget to take water, wear a hat and sun cream, and take regular breaks if you're joining a shore tour with walking and limited shade.

September

September is a wonderful time to cruise the Mediterranean, combining warm weather and sea temperatures with a more relaxed atmosphere ashore. While summer is beginning to wind down, the sea remains pleasantly warm, and many ports are noticeably quieter once the school holidays have ended.

  • Weather: Daytime temperatures typically reach 26–28°C, offering plenty of warmth while remaining comfortable for exploring ashore.
  • Sea: Sea temperatures are usually around 23–24°C, making it the perfect time of year for swimming and spending time at the beach or wandering along waterfronts.
  • Crowds: Visitor numbers tend to ease as the month progresses, particularly after the school holidays, giving many Mediterranean destinations a more relaxed feel.
  • Highlights: Warm seas, comfortable conditions for exploring, and a gentler pace make September a favourite time to visit the region. With summer crowds beginning to dissipate, it's often easier to uncover famous sites, wander around local markets and enjoy time ashore at a more leisurely pace.

October

For many visitors, October offers a different side to the Mediterranean as the seasons begin to change. The intensity of summer has eased, leaving behind pleasant temperatures, quieter waterfronts and a more laid-back feel in many ports.

  • Weather: Daytime temperatures are typically around 22°C across much of the region, making it comfortable for spending time exploring towns, cities and landmarks.
  • Sea: Sea temperatures usually range from 20–21°C. Whilst cooler than in September, the water can still feel pleasant, particularly earlier in the month.
  • Crowds: Visitor numbers are generally lower than during the summer, and many ports have a noticeably calmer and more relaxed feel.
  • Highlights: Autumn brings beautiful golden light and seasonal food and drink experiences, influenced by the grape and olive harvests in many Mediterranean destinations.

November to February

November to February is a rewarding time to cruise the Mediterranean where you can focus on culture and exploration rather than days spent at the beach. While the weather is cooler and more changeable, you'll often find quieter ports and a more relaxed atmosphere.

  • Weather: Daytime temperatures typically range from 12–18°C and can be more changeable than at other times of year, but the cooler weather is often well suited to exploring cities and famous sites.
  • Sea: Sea temperatures generally range from 10–19°C and can be more changeable than during the summer months.
  • Crowds: This is usually the quietest time of year to visit. While some seasonal attractions may reduce their opening hours or close for the winter, popular cities and cultural sites remain open.
  • Highlights: With fewer visitors around, many destinations can feel much more relaxed. It's also a wonderful time to focus on the region's architecture, history and local cuisine.

Are there Mediterranean cruises in December?

Yes, during December 2027, Balmoral sails from Piraeus to explore some of the Mediterranean’s most iconic islands. All our 2027 fly-cruises allow you to reach your starting destination without the longer journey by sea, enabling you to sail deeper and discover more.

The best time for the holiday you want

If you would rather choose by what matters for you on a cruise, rather than by month, here is how the year breaks down.

Best for sightseeing and shore days

For wandering through old towns and exploring famous sites, April, May, late September and October are ideal months to consider cruising. Temperatures tend to be pleasantly warm, making exploration on foot more comfortable, while ports can also be quieter than during the peak summer months. Explore our recommended Mediterranean cruise routes for more inspiration.

Best for sunshine and swimming

If you’re looking for pleasant temperatures, sunny weather and warmer seas, July to early September is a great time to visit the Mediterranean. Sea temperatures are typically around 23–26°C at this time of year, with plenty of sunshine too. Ports can be busier during the summer months, so you may prefer to explore earlier or later in the day when it’s cooler. Our guide to what to wear on a warm cruise can help you decide what to pack.

Best for fewer crowds and value

If you prefer quieter ports and better value, spring, late autumn and winter are worth considering. You'll often find lower prices, fewer crowds and more space to enjoy the places you’re visiting. While the weather can be cooler and less predictable than in summer, it can be a lovely time to explore, particularly if sightseeing, local culture and fewer crowds are more important to you than warmer weather.

Is the Mediterranean calm for cruising?

from late spring through the summer. Conditions naturally vary between destinations and seasons, but as the Mediterranean is largely enclosed, you’re less likely to experience the ocean swells associated with the open Atlantic. There are some regional winds you may hear about, however:

  • The Mistral: This cool, northerly wind can bring choppier seas to parts of the Western Mediterranean, particularly around southern France and the Gulf of Lion. This is more common in winter and spring.
  • The Meltemi: Common across the Aegean in summer, particularly during July and August, this northerly wind can sometimes make conditions around the Greek islands choppier.

Tips if you are worried about seasickness

Many people worry about seasickness, but a few simple steps can make a real difference:

  • Choose a lower, mid-ship cabin. This is the part of the ship that moves the least.
  • Get fresh air. A few minutes on deck, looking at the horizon, can help your brain and body settle.
  • Choose calmer months. Late spring, summer and early autumn tend to have the smoothest seas.
  • Ask a professional. If you are prone to motion sickness, speak to your pharmacist or GP about remedies before you travel.

Eastern vs Western Mediterranean: does the best time differ?

The Eastern Mediterranean, including Greece, Croatia and Turkey, tends to stay warmer later into the year, making September and October good months to consider taking a cruise. The Western Mediterranean, including Spain, France and Italy, starts to cool a little earlier, but can be a great choice during spring and early summer, with the chance to explore outside the peak summer months in July and August.

No-fly or fly cruise: how timing affects your choice

When you choose to visit may also play a part in how you get to the Mediterranean.

  • No-fly cruises sail from the UK, so you can begin your holiday without flying and enjoy more time at sea along the way. They’re a great choice if you want to enjoy a more relaxed journey and time to engage in the various activities on board.
  • Fly cruises take you closer to the places you’ll be exploring, so you can join your ship in the Mediterranean and enjoy more time discovering destinations along the way.

I’ve been with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines for 30 years, starting in Reservations when we had just one ship, Black Prince. In those early days, bookings were handwritten in a ‘berthing book’ before moving into our systems once confirmed. I later moved into Admin (now Guest Services), supporting bookings and guest requests across Black Watch and Boudicca as our fleet grew, and spending time in Southampton and Dover welcoming guests on board and seeing them off – a part of the role I always enjoyed. I then joined our Flights and Transport team, arranging travel for guests and working closely with airlines and coach companies. I often travelled as the Fred. Olsen representative, including regular same-day trips to Barbados to support guests throughout their journey. From there, I moved into our Digital team, helping shape the content of our website and now focusing on copywriting. I enjoy creating clear, engaging content, always thinking from our guests’ perspective and how we can support their holiday from the very start.
