Your cruise at a glance
Hand-crafted highlights
This five-night escape is a relaxed way to enjoy the tail end of summer, timed over a bank holiday weekend, so only a few days of annual leave are needed. Visiting two regions of Northern Spain, you’ll discover celebrated sights and everyday local character. Getxo is the gateway to Bilbao, home to the silver curves of the Guggenheim Museum and the narrow streets of the Casco Viejo. In Santander, enjoy promenade walks, the vast sands of El Sardinero Beach and the picturesque grounds of the Palacio de la Magdalena. Pause to sample freshly prepared pintxos with a glass of Rioja, or head inland to valleys and villages such as Potes to see why this area is known as Green Spain. During days at sea, step out on deck and keep watch for dolphins that sometimes appear alongside the ship.

Getxo is your gateway to Bilbao, where you can hop on the metro (the juorney takes about 30 minutes) and explore the iconic Guggenheim Museum or stroll through the narrow streets of the Casco Viejo, pausing at lively pintxos bars. Venture further to the renowned Rioja wine region to visit a local winery and enjoy tastings. In Getxo itself, the striking Vizcaya Bridge spanning the River Nervión is well worth a visit, as is the nearby Basque town of San Sebastián, with its beaches and gastronomy.
The centre of Bilbao is approximately 8.5 miles (14km) from Getxo cruise port, typically taking around 25 minutes, depending on traffic.
When your ship is berthed some distance from the centre of your destination, a convenient shuttle bus service is often provided to save you money on taxi fares. This shuttle bus will transport you to the centre of Getxo, where you can then hop on the metro to Bilbao.
All day shuttle bus tickets (for which a small charge applies) can be bought from Guest Services and are added to your cabin account. However, for those guests who are booked on a Freedom Fare offer, this charge is included (if berthed more than one mile away (unless local restrictions prevent this service).
Santander beautifully combines notable architecture and well-known beaches. The crescent shaped El Sardinero Beach is ideal for a walk along the promenade, and the old town features lively squares, cafés and markets. Don’t miss the Palacio de la Magdalena, set amidst beautifully manicured grounds, and be sure to sample pintxos accompanied by a glass of Rioja.
Daytime highs in Santander and Getxo are generally a pleasant 22–25°C but do be prepared for occasional showers. Evenings are slightly cooler at around 15–18°C, but still enjoyable for a stroll, wearing a light jacket.
