With an expansive programme of beautiful destinations, first class hospitality and immersive onboard entertainment, a cruise holiday with Fred. Olsen is a unique, unmatched experience.

Fred. Olsen’s Braemar is a smaller-sized cruise ship with a welcoming atmosphere, and due to its size can navigate shallower, narrow rivers and waterways, bringing guests closer to the stunning destinations on offer. Malaga is one of the many highlights on the expertly-crafted itinerary for Fred. Olsen’s Spanish City Discover cruise. Sailing on Braemar into Malaga means guests are presented with an intimate glimpse of the city from the moment the step ashore, having been guided into the heart of the local culture.

We’ve cherry-picked a few highlights from the stunning port city below and outlined why cruising to Malaga with Fred. Olsen is the best way to experience its many delights.

Sailing into the heart of Malaga

The port of Malaga is one of the oldest ports in the Mediterranean and is steeped in rich history and tradition. As Braemar glides into the port, guests on board can soak up views of breathtaking beaches featuring seemingly endless golden sands that epitomise the beauty of the Mediterranean coast. Once ashore, it doesn’t take long to realise that Malaga is a great place to indulge with authentic Spanish cuisine, history and culture.

Enjoy delicious tapas and other culinary delights at your pick of the fantastic restaurants; visit some of Spain’s very best museums and galleries; and immerse yourself in rich heritage that has captured imaginations for centuries.

The Beach

Malaga beach

Malaga is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches with its soft sands and glorious blue seas. Sun worshippers are spoilt for choice with 15 beaches in the proximity of the city limits, each with their own special charm. Whether you decide to stroll down to San Andres beach, or bask in the long stretch of golden sands on San Julian beach, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the glorious Mediterranean weather. For a break from the sunshine, perhaps find somewhere to try delicious local delights such as espeto de sardinas (grilled sardines on skewers), which are cooked on open fires made from boats docked in the sand.

Museums

Although Malaga’s beaches are always an enticing prospect, the city offers much more than just sand and sea. The city boasts a host of historical sights and cultural museums, including the Picasso museum. Exhibiting more than 250 pieces from Pablo Picasso, the museum is a tribute to the great artist and Malaga native, bringing to light many of his finest painting, sketches and drawings.  Other highlights include the Centre Pompidou Malaga, which showcases beautiful contemporary art, and the Malaga Museum that exhibits an array of fine arts and special archaeological finds.

Malaga Cathedral

Malaga Cathedral

As one of the jewels of the Spanish Renaissance, Malaga Cathedral is a stunning example of Baroque period architecture. The single tower of the cathedral gives it a unique, lopsided feel that has influenced its nickname of la Manquita (‘the One-Armed Lady’). When stopping off at Malaga, the cathedral is a must-see with its incredible soaring ceilings and beautifully painted interiors.

Alcazaba Fortress and Gibralfaro Castle

On the city’s highest hills sit the dual fortresses, the Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro castle. Both originate from the Moorish period during the 11th century and are known to be built on ruined Roman structures.. As the Alcazaba is one of the city’s most historical monuments, a visit to the fortress is essential to the Malaga experience. Nowadays sightseers can travel up the fortification and experience spectacular 360 degree views overlooking the entire city.
