The enigmatic Northern Lights
Your cruise to the Northern Lights has been timed perfectly for you to have the best possible chance of witnessing the captivating beauty of the Aurora Borealis. Located in the far north of Norway, above the Arctic Circle, the towns of Alta and Tromsø provide the perfect settings in which you can hope to see nature's most spellbinding light show, where ribbons of green, pink and purple streak across the sky. Vesterålen is located just beneath the Aurora Oval, so you may have the opportunity to see the Northern Lights illuminating the skies above Sortland's picturesque fishing villages, providing you with a perfect panorama.
Life in the Arctic
Discover wintry terrain and experience life for local communities above the Arctic Circle, as you spend time with the Sámi people in Alta and Tromsø. Take the opportunity to immerse yourself in activities such as reindeer herding or sledding, where you may be able to help feed the animals, and step inside a lavvu hut to hear stories from the Sámi about life as a reindeer herder. Do join us on a tour from Bolette to meet the beautiful husky dogs of Northern Norway, and experience an exhilarating husky ride through picture-perfect winter landscapes.
The science behind the Aurora Borealis
Norway is the perfect place in which to witness the awe-inspiring Northern Lights, as it's located within the auroral oval, a ring-shaped region surrounding the Earth's magnetic poles where auroras are most commonly seen, and due to its northern location, relatively clear skies and minimal light pollution, it's the ideal place for viewing this natural phenomenon. Discover how the Aurora Borealis occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, interact with oxygen and nitrogen molecules and release energy in the form of light.

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.
