Highlights

Guests looking out to Northern lights from deck

Seeking out the elusive Aurora Borealis

This cruise aboard Borealis has been carefully planned to give you the best chance of seeing the elusive Northern Lights. In Northern Norway, the winter months are marked by long, dark nights and brilliant auroras that dance across the sky. You will have plenty of time to search for the Northern Lights from the decks of Borealis while we sail between our exciting Arctic destinations. When in Narvik, you'll be in an ideal location to seek out the enigmatic Aurora Borealis, and on board your ship, you can enjoy the dark starry skies with minimal light pollution while you wait for the lights to appear magically overhead.

Reindeer at a traditional Sami village

Life north of the Arctic Circle

Throughout your Borealis cruise, you are ideally placed to witness the way of life in the Arctic. When in Narvik, you will have the unique opportunity to interact with the local Sámi community and learn about their rich culture, which is typified by their distinctive language, traditional dress, music, and folklore, as well as their livelihoods of fishing, hunting, and reindeer herding. You will also be able to enjoy spending time feeding the reindeer and hearing stories of daily life for the Sámi in the comfort of a lavvu tent; while in Alesund you can discover the distinctive Art Nouveau architecture and vibrant fishing culture of the adventure capital of the fjords.

Discover the science behind the Northern Lights

As you go in search of the Aurora Borealis, you will also have the chance to discover the science behind the ethereal ribbons of colour that float across the night sky. The colours are created by charged particles from the sun, resulting in the bright green and red shades being produced by oxygen, while the blue and purple tones are caused by nitrogen. During your cruise, you'll have several opportunities to discover more of the scientific reasons behind Mother Nature's spectacular light show, and the historical significance of their creation.
