Highlights

Jemaa el-Fna Square, Morocco

Mazy Medinas

Our journey planners have designed this cruise aboard Borealis for you to discover the maze of medinas in three exciting Moroccan destinations. From Casablanca, explore the cultural heart of Marrakech, with its vibrant maze of narrow alleyways, bustling souks and iconic landmarks such as Jemaa el-Fna Square, which embodies Morocco's rich history and culture. In Tangier, visit Tetouan, a UNESCO-listed medina featuring Andalusian and Moorish influences, and home to narrow streets full of historic architecture; or its historic medina bustling with slender streets and vibrant markets, showcasing the diverse Arab, Andalusian, and European architectural influences. You will also have the chance to explore Chefchaouen with its distinctive blue-painted medina.

The Moroccan way of life

Throughout your cruise, you will have plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the local way of life in Morocco. In Casablanca, enjoy the delicious taste of Pastilla, a savoury-sweet pastry filled with chicken, or Mechoui - a seasonal slow-roasted lamb dish, accompanied by spiced aromatic coffee; while Agadir offers the chance to take a welcoming mint tea with a local Berber community, and listen to Amazigh music or watch a performance of the traditional group dance of Ahwach. When in Tangier, be sure to sample simply grilled sardines and soak up the city's cafe culture.

Hassan II Square, Morocco

The Arab-Berber influence

North Africa has seen a complex blending of the Arab and Berber communities over centuries, resulting in a unique cultural and historical tapestry. The architecture in the region is evident in buildings such as the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, which combines traditional Islamic and modern designs; while in Marrakech, the Koutoubia Mosque showcases Moorish and Andalusian influences. Also in Marrakech is Bahia Palace, a 19th-century building painted with colourful mosaics and stuccos. From Tangier, join us on a tour to witness the Kasbah, which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, and Grand Socco, the main square in the medina which perfectly blends Arab, Berber and European cultures.
