In Search of the Northern Lights

Ålesund promises a captivating blend of history, nature, and adventure. After ascending the 418 steps to Mount Aksla’s summit, which reveals panoramic views of the surrounding islands and fjords, you could be enjoying an early winter stroll in the charming city centre, with its colourful Art Nouveau buildings and eateries serving fresh seafood and local dishes like bacalao. Meanwhile, the nearby islands of Giske and Godøy, with their quaint villages and unspoilt scenery, offer opportunities to partake in outdoor pursuits such as hiking and wildlife spotting.

Torghatten is an iconic mountain shaped by the Scandinavian Ice Age and renowned for the huge hole that punctuates its centre. Sailing alongside this geological spectacle, framed by towering cliffs and rugged coastlines, offers a unique view from the perspective of the sea. In winter, the scene transforms into a picturesque wonderland, with snow dusting the mountain’s peak, but the relatively mild climate here ensures the surrounding fjords stay clear and eerily still.

Sailing past the snow-covered peaks of the Seven Sisters Mountain Range on board your ship offers you the very best vantage point for admiring the beauty of Norway’s landscapes during the winter. Carved during the Ice Age, the mountains tell a folkloric tale of seven troll sisters, pursued by potential suitors, who turned to stone when the sun rose. Cruising along the Helgeland coastline will present an abundance of opportunities to join us out on deck for superb views of tiny islands nestled against the Seven Sisters wintry backdrop.

Embarking on the maritime tradition of crossing the Arctic Circle is a cherished experience for guests and crew alike. This momentous occasion, often announced by our Captain, invites you to venture out on deck and celebrate. You may choose to participate in a ceremonial ritual, complete with optional 'baptisms', where ice-cold water is poured down your back, or simply delight in the atmosphere of excitement and anticipation.

Located far north of the Arctic Circle, and set at the tip of a peninsula between the Rombak fjord and Beisfjord, Narvik’s city Harbour remains ice-free, and is used year round for iron ore exports. A relatively new city, Narvik was established in 1902, when the Ofoten Railway was completed, although it has been inhabited since Prehistoric times. The church here is a fine example of Scandinavian architecture, and the indigenous Sámi culture thrives alongside the modern world.

Known as ‘Blue Town’, the unique town of Sortland was given its nickname due to its buildings being almost entirely painted in varying shades of blue, chosen by local artist Bjorn Elvenes, to represent Sortland's maritime and fishing heritage. The surrounding waters of the town are teeming with various species of fish, seabirds, seals and whales; and rugged, unspoilt landscapes are the town's backdrop.

Tromsø is renowned as a prime location for seeking out the Northern Lights, and the long, dark winter nights enhance your chances of witnessing this awe-inspiring natural spectacle even further. There will be opportunities to try local delicacies such as reindeer and king crab, to ride the cable car to the top of Mount Storsteinen, and to visit the iceberg-shaped Arctic Cathedral – a masterpiece of modern architecture. You’ll also be ideally placed for joining an exhilarating dog sledding tour through the wintery landscapes, or to meet the local indigenous Sámi community to learn about their fascinating way of life.

Harstad, a picturesque town in northern Norway, rests along the shores of the Vågsfjorden and serves as the gateway to Vesterålen, where you may be able to see various species of whale and the distinctive Lofoten Islands. During the winter months, Harstad is the ideal spot to witness the breathtaking Northern Lights, with snow-covered mountains and islands creating a magical Arctic landscape. You can explore the town's historical sites like the medieval Trondenes Church or spend time with the local Sámi people, learning about their culture.

The Hanseatic city of Bergen is steeped in maritime history, with the 900-year old Bryggen Wharf being its highlight. Here, the famous fish market offers appealing fresh seafood, fruit and vegetables. Edvard Grieg, Norway’s renowned composer had a home here and the Troldhaugen Museum is devoted to his work. Close by is the funicular railway, offering unrivalled views from the top of Mount Fløyen.
