The Olsen Way Highlights

Sample a taste of the Fred. Olsen cruise experience on this five-night sailing over the summer Bank Holiday weekend, visiting destinations chosen for their scenic landscapes, island life and local produce. The benefits of the Isles of Scillys' sub-tropical microclimate can be enjoyed as you wander at Tresco Abbey Gardens, while a visit to Honfleur is perfect for sampling local camembert and calvados. The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles under German control during World War II, so having a stop in picturesque St Peter Port will offer guests the chance to uncover Guernsey's fascinating history. Afterwards, Borealis will take you on a Scenic Discovery among the Channel Islands, rounding off your break in style.

Highlights

The Garrison, St Mary's, Isles of Scilly, England

World War II military outpost

Nowadays, the Isles of Scilly are a subtropical paradise with St. Mary’s covered in beautiful flowers, and a haven of natural beauty. However, during World War II, the islands were used as an outpost for defending Britain’s shores, with St. Mary’s located the farthest southwest. Large numbers of servicemen were stationed here, with the Garrison used as an important signal station – today cleverly constructed pillboxes can still be seen within the 18th century batteries.

Castle Cornet, St Peter's port

German occupation in Guernsey

The Channel Islands were the only part of Britain to have been occupied by Germans during the Second World War, and was known as part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall. The La Vallette Military Museum on the island of Guernsey is housed within a complex of tunnels which the German forces built to store their U-Boat fleet, and holds a fascinating display of military artefacts from World War II. Considering the position it held during the war, it’s astonishing that so many of the town’s centuries-old fortifications are still standing – including the 800 year old Castle Cornet.

Tresco Abbey Gardens, Isles of Scilly, England

A subtropical microclimate

The Isles of Scilly are known for having a subtropical climate, due to their location in the warm Gulf Stream, making it the ideal habitat for exotic plants to flourish. St. Mary’s Tresco Abbey Gardens are home to over 20,000 plants from 80 different countries, and were founded in 1834 by Augustus Smith. Giant palm trees, lipstick red-flame trees and the Lobster Claw sit alongside dwarf pansies, orange birdsfoot – only found in the Scilly Isles, and Agapanthus. The gardens are also home to many sculptures and figureheads.
