Marih Jui Bugto, Assistant Barkeeper
Marih’s career at sea has been full of progress, passion and proud moments. We caught up with her to uncover some of her most memorable experiences on the ocean and gain an insight into her role as Assistant Barkeeper.
What’s your role, and when did you join Fred. Olsen?
I'm currently working on board Balmoral as an Assistant Barkeeper, mainly in the Bookmark Café. I joined the Fred. Olsen family in July 2022 as an Assistant Bar Waitress, and after just four months I was promoted to Bar Waitress. I always try to go above and beyond expectations, and some guests may know me for my fun coffee art designs.
Have you had any special achievements during your journey so far?
Definitely. I owe a lot to my colleagues in the Bookmark Café who inspired me with their skills and dedication. Thanks to their guidance, I was given the chance to manage the Bookmark Café, until I took the opportunity to expand my experience by working in the Marquee Bar and Thistle Bar, which eventually led to my promotion to Assistant Barkeeper.
What’s a typical day like for you on board?
My day usually starts with preparing the bar, making sure everything is clean, organised and fully stocked. I serve drinks, chat to our guests and make sure that they are satisfied with their experience. I also handle inventory and team coordination. Every day brings something new, and I enjoy the fast-paced environment and the opportunity to grow.
What inspired you to work on a cruise ship?
What drew me to this industry was the opportunity to travel the world and experience different cultures. It’s an amazing way to explore new places while earning a living, and along the way I’ve met incredible people from all walks of life. This job has had a huge impact on my life. My twin sister and I were working students in college, and I worked hard to earn a spot in this industry so I could help support my family. Being here has given me the chance to provide for them and build a better future.
What’s been your most memorable experience with Fred. Olsen so far?
One of my proudest moments was being awarded Employee of the Month in December 2023. I was incredibly happy and proud because I know how hard all of us work, and many of my fellow crew members are just as deserving. It felt great to be recognised. I also enjoyed participating in the crew show and various bar events where I got to sing and dance – both fun and rewarding experiences.
What do you enjoy most about life on board?
One of my favourite things about working on board is meeting new people. Working in the cruise industry brings together crew and guests from all over the world, creating a diverse and lively work environment. I also love the sense of adventure – each cruise offers something different, with new destinations, activities and guest experiences that keep things exciting and fresh.
Do you have any favourite places you’ve visited around the world?
One of the most amazing places I've visited so far is the Antarctic Peninsula. The breathtaking views of ice-covered landscapes, massive icebergs and wildlife like penguins and whales made it an unforgettable experience. For food and shopping, I really love Cádiz, Spain. The food is delicious and affordable, and I usually look for Asian dishes whenever I get the chance. I’d love to visit Greece, the United States and Paris.
