Game, set and strawberries

Tennis game. Strawberries, champagne and tennis balls with rackets on the green grass.
Shona Michell 30th June 2026

As Wimbledon gets underway, we explore the much-loved traditions that make this iconic tournament so distinctive, from sporting elegance to strawberries and Champagne, and how the occasion can be enjoyed at sea, with familiar rituals, shared moments and a relaxed sense of celebration on board.

A tradition served with strawberries

Strawberries and cream have long been part of the Wimbledon experience, with the tradition said to date back to the tournament’s early years in the Victorian era. At that time, strawberries were a short-lived seasonal treat, only available for a few weeks in June and July, perfectly aligning with the Championships, and they remain a favourite to this day. Each year, around 140,000 portions are enjoyed during the tournament, with approximately 28,000 kilograms of strawberries and 7,000 litres of cream served across the fortnight.

A toast to the occasion

Champagne, too, has become closely associated with Wimbledon, with Champagne Lanson named as the tournament’s official supplier since 1977. Over the course of the Championships, more than 25,000 bottles are said to be enjoyed, adding to the sense of occasion as spectators soak up the atmosphere at SW19 and watch world-class tennis at its very best.

A shared sense of occasion

It is this sense of occasion that makes Wimbledon so special. It is not only the tennis, but the traditions that surround it: the first glimpse of Centre Court, the strawberries and cream, the clink of glasses, and the shared anticipation as a match unfolds.

Wimbledon moments at sea

On board our ships, we bring that same spirit to life in a relaxed and welcoming way. Guests can watch live coverage in selected venues, take part in light-hearted quizzes inspired by the tournament, and enjoy a Wimbledon-themed Afternoon Tea. There will be plenty of ways to raise a glass too, with a special Wimbledon drinks menu featuring classic Champagnes and sparkling cocktails, from a Bellini or Kir Royale to a Pimm’s Royale. It is a chance to be part of the atmosphere, wherever in the world you are sailing.

From Afternoon Tea to special celebrations and live sporting moments, these little rituals help make life on board feel familiar, sociable and full of occasion. Wimbledon is one more way to come together, enjoy a favourite British tradition, and make time at sea feel even more memorable.

I’ve been with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines for 30 years, starting in Reservations when we had just one ship, Black Prince. In those early days, bookings were handwritten in a ‘berthing book’ before moving into our systems once confirmed. I later moved into Admin (now Guest Services), supporting bookings and guest requests across Black Watch and Boudicca as our fleet grew, and spending time in Southampton and Dover welcoming guests on board and seeing them off – a part of the role I always enjoyed. I then joined our Flights and Transport team, arranging travel for guests and working closely with airlines and coach companies. I often travelled as the Fred. Olsen representative, including regular same-day trips to Barbados to support guests throughout their journey. From there, I moved into our Digital team, helping shape the content of our website and now focusing on copywriting. I enjoy creating clear, engaging content, always thinking from our guests’ perspective and how we can support their holiday from the very start.
