Amazon & Antarctica Adventure

A rare return. A remarkable new adventure

An 87-night Grand Voyage through the Amazon, Antarctic Peninsula, Central America and the Caribbean – few journeys bring together landscapes as dramatically diverse as these.

For the first time in nine years, we’re returning to the Amazon, where Borealis sails beyond the coastline and into one of the world’s greatest waterways. As the only cruise line sailing there from the UK, this is a rare opportunity to experience the region without flying, with rainforest-lined riverbanks, colourful riverside communities revealing a different side of South America, and the opportunity to spot elusive wildlife and vibrant birdlife. [ReadMoreMob]

Then comes Antarctica. Vast, silent and awe-inspiring, the Antarctic Peninsula offers unforgettable scenic cruising among towering glaciers and drifting icebergs. There’s also the chance to spot extraordinary wildlife, including penguins, seals and whales.

Along the way, discover vibrant cities such as Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, explore Costa Rica’s tropical wildlife and enjoy island-hopping through the Caribbean, with each destination adding another layer to this wide-ranging adventure.

Throughout it all, life on board Borealis is every bit as rewarding as the destinations themselves, with expert speakers, welcoming service and unhurried days designed to help you enjoy every moment of the journey.

Extraordinary destinations. Unforgettable moments

The Amazon

Cruising to the Amazon offers a closer look at one of the world’s most diverse natural environments - shaped by thousands of waterways with dense rainforest and wide river channels all existing side by side, creating a landscape that changes with the seasons. Water levels rise and fall throughout the year, opening areas that are inaccessible at other times.[ReadMoreMob][ReadMoreDesk]

A visit to Manaus reveals grand 19th-century architecture, while Santarém sits within a striking natural landscape and is seen as the gateway to the rainforests; and time ashore includes opportunities to meet local communities and discover how people live and work along the river.

The Amazon is home to more than a third of the world’s species. Brightly coloured birds such as toucans and macaws, capuchin monkey’s, river dolphins and a wide variety of plant life can all be seen or heard.

There’s also a strong sense of folklore in the region. Stories such as Yacumama, the ‘Mother of the Waters’, said to protect the river and its creatures, and Boitatá, described as a glowing serpent that guards the forest at night, are still shared today and reflect the Amazon’s cultural heritage.

Antarctica Peninsula

The Antarctic Peninsula is one of the most inaccessible parts of Antarctica – a long, mountainous stretch of land reaching towards South America. The landscape here is one of snow-covered peaks rise sharply from the sea, glaciers spilling into calm, ice-filled channels, and turquoise icebergs drifting slowly past, from small, sculpted pieces to vast, flat-topped formations.[ReadMoreMob][ReadMoreDesk]

Wildlife is a key part of the experience and depending on the season, you may see colonies of penguins gathering along the shoreline, seals resting on floating icebergs, whales surfacing in sheltered bays and seabirds circling above cliffs and open water. Encounters are often at a respectful distance, but feel close and unhurried, with plenty of time to observe natural behaviour.

Scenic cruising along the Antarctic Peninsula offers a relaxed way to take in the landscape. From the decks of Borealis, or the comfort of the lounges, you can watch the scenery unfold at a steady pace, and as light shifts across the ice throughout the day, changing colours and textures, the quietness of the surroundings adds to the sense of remoteness.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is renowned for its protected natural areas and wildlife, with lush rainforests as the perfect habitat for sloths, monkeys, humpback whales and several bird species, all playing a fundamental role in the local ecosystem.[ReadMoreMob][ReadMoreDesk]

Costa Rica has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, and the landscape responds quickly, rivers swell, forests thicken and wildlife activity shifts throughout the year.

There’s also a strong sense of everyday life running alongside the natural rainforest setting. Small towns and communities are closely tied to the land and sea, and the phrase ‘pura vida’ reflects a laid-back, positive approach to daily living.

Caribbean

The Caribbean offers a varied mix of islands, each with its own character. Spend time in destinations shaped by coastal scenery, local communities and a relaxed pace of life.[ReadMoreMob]

Across the region, there’s a strong focus on time outdoors.[ReadMoreDesk] Willemstad is a UNESCO-listed city with a distinctive waterfront lined with brightly coloured buildings and markets, while Grenada is known for its rainforest and diverse plant and wildlife. Dominica offers a more rugged landscape of waterfalls, hot springs and dense forest, and Barbados is characterised by white-sand beaches, clear waters and palm-lined shores.

Time ashore is often simple – walking along the beach, swimming in clear water or exploring local towns at your own pace. Food also varies by island, shaped by local ingredients and a mix of cultural influences. Menus typically feature fresh seafood, regional specialities and dishes that reflect the history and identity of each destination.

South America

South America is a large and varied continent, defined by contrast. From tropical rainforests, high mountains and long coastlines to bustling cities, the scenery changes quickly between regions.[ReadMoreMob][ReadMoreDesk]

Rio is home to the iconic sights of Sugar Loaf Mountain, and Christ the Redeemer watching over the city from Corcovado Mountain, while Ipanema and Copacabana beaches offer long stretches of sand and a steady rhythm of daily life, from early morning exercise to evenings spent by the sea.

There’s a strong cultural identity here, shaped by music, sport and local tradition. Samba is closely linked to Rio, and the annual Carnival is one of the largest events in the city, centred around parades, music and community celebrations.

Buenos Aires is a city shaped by its European heritage and South American setting, with wide avenues, historic architecture and a rich culture. The city is closely associated with tango, which remains an important part of local life. Performances can be found in theatres and smaller venues, but you may also stumble across in public squares and neighbourhood streets.

The joy is in the journey

Some journeys are measured in miles. The most memorable are measured in moments.

Over 87 nights, Borealis sails from Southampton to the Amazon and Antarctica, with time to truly experience each destination, not simply tick it off.

Days at sea become part of the adventure. Time ashore becomes richer. Each destination has space to unfold naturally, allowing you to connect more deeply with the people, wildlife and landscapes along the way.

It's a Grand Voyage that’s thoughtfully paced, carefully curated and designed around the journey itself.
