Meet the Crew

Safety Officer Euan Ross

SAFETY OFFICER EUAN ROSS

Safety Officer Euan Ross has had an impressive career with Fred. Olsen, joining as a Deck Cadet and working his way up through the ranks. The Bridge spoke to him about his time at sea, from career milestones to unforgettable moments with family and guests.

Tell us about your journey with Fred. Olsen and how it all began?

I joined Fred. Olsen as a Deck Cadet in September 2011. After completing my training, I qualified as a 3rd Officer in 2014 and gradually progressed through the ranks to 2nd Officer, then 1st Officer. Since 2022, I’ve been serving as Safety Officer. It’s quite surreal to think I’ve been with the company for 14 years – it’s been an incredible journey.

What inspired your cruise career, and how has it shaped your life?

Honestly, I didn’t have a strong interest in ships or the sea to begin with. After finishing school at 18, I enrolled in university to study electrical engineering but quickly realised it wasn’t the right path for me, especially the first-year maths. After leaving university, I was unsure of what to do next. My father, grandfather and great-grandfather all had careers at sea, and it was my father who suggested I give it a try. I applied without thinking too much about it, and a few months later I was beginning my cadetship at Warsash Maritime Academy.

Over time, I’ve grown to really value the lifestyle. While I work on board for half the year, the balance it provides – being able to spend the other half with my family – is something I wouldn’t trade for a typical 9-to-5 shore job.

What’s been your most memorable experience with Fred. Olsen so far?

The D-Day 75th anniversary cruise aboard Boudicca stands out as the most memorable experience of my time with Fred. Olsen. Meeting and speaking with the veterans on board was incredibly humbling. I particularly remember one gentleman I found walking the deck at 4 a.m. He asked if he could see the Bridge and I was more than happy to give him a personal tour. If I remember correctly, his name was Raymond – 102 years old and sharp as a tack. Moments like that stay with you.

What do you find most rewarding about working at sea?

One of the most rewarding parts of my career has been having my fiancée and sons on board. They absolutely love the experience, and it means a great deal to me to be able to share my life at sea with them. The same goes for my parents – they really enjoy cruising when I’m on board, especially during the summer sailings on Balmoral from Rosyth, which is only about 20 minutes from home. It’s a special feeling to combine work with family time in that way.
