Portland is the largest city in Maine, with a rich history in agriculture, earning itself the nickname of ‘The Pine Tree State’. The city has a number of lighthouses, as Portland played an important part in many battles around the time of the American Revolution. There is a strong cultural identity, where the Arts District is seen as a hotspot for artists; and the city also has the oldest standing structure on the peninsula, childhood home of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
