Vila do Porto, Azores

Introduction to Vila do Porto, Azores

Vila do Porto, Azores

Vila do Porto is the main town on Santa Maria, the oldest island in the Azores. Situated in the south west of the island, Vila do Porto benefits from a warm, dry climate giving it a very Mediterranean feel. By contrast the eastern side of Santa Maria is much greener, with the centre being more akin to other islands in the Azores with a mountainous and lush landscape.

Vila do Porto is built around a 16th century fort and runs in a straight line towards the sea. Original architecture dating from the 15th to 17th centuries, albeit in a state of disrepair, lines the main street. The city hall is set in a former convent and an array of ancient churches and monasteries ensure there is plenty to quench the sightseers thirst. For those wishing to sample the local delicacies, there are a few small restaurants that line the main street and serve traditional dishes such as grilled fish.

Santa Maria itself boasts an abundance of beautiful beaches, including the fabulous beach at Praia Formosa, perfect for those wishing to find a quiet spot for some sunbathing. Further afield, the shell-shaped bay of São Lourenço features crystal blue waters with a backdrop of grapevines cascading down the hillside to the water’s edge.

The pretty village of Anjos is nestled on the north coast and is the place reputed to have been visited by Christopher Columbus on his return voyage from the Americas.
