About us

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has defined and refined the cruise experience, and judging by the number of passengers that come back time and again, we seem to have styled it to perfection.

The company originated in Hvitsten, a small town on Oslofjord in Norway, in 1848 when three Olsen brothers – Fredrik Christian, Petter and Andreas – bought their first ships and began an international shipping company.

Now into the fifth generation of the family, they operate companies skilled in various aspects of the cruise and passenger shipping trade as well as aviation, ships’ crewing, shipbuilding and offshore industries.

Aside from the transportation industries, the Fred. Olsen group also has interests in the luxury hotel sector, estate management, property development, and electronics companies.

Offices for the company are spread throughout the world, although the company headquarters remain firmly in the family’s hands in Oslo and Tenerife. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is based in Ipswich in Suffolk.

Fred. Olsen History

The Olsen family business can be traced back to 1848.  Here, a young shipmaster called Fredrik Christian Olsen (known as the First Fred. Olsen) entered shipowning on his own account.  His earliest vessels were wooden schooners of little more than 50 gross tons.

Service: Make sure that all dry dockings and refit's are complete before putting the ship back into service. Balmoral December 2017. Do not berth two of your cruise ships on the same cruise terminal at the same time, as passengers were quing in there cars and taxies for up to one and a half hours in Southampton port.
Product: Interesting ports of call and fireworks that must be in the top 10 of world new years displays.

Service: The staff on the ship were approachable and helpful.
Product: The itinerary was irrelevant to us as we had visited all the ports before.

Service: the best Christmas ever the entertainment team did a fantastic job. I usually spend Christmas and New Year on the Balmoral and have always enjoyed it but Black watch was so much better. The only criticiism I have was that you seem to have cut back on the number of waiters you have. They do a fantastic job but seem to be stretched to far, especially as they look after the wine as well. It was always difficult to catch a waiter to get you coffee at lunch time

Service: Get passengers to wash their hand after using the lavatory
Product: Very expensive cruise which lacked memorable moments. Table member very quickly ill which he passed on to us. Cannot fault medical staff who treated me and saved my husband's life.

Service: We chose the cruise mainly for the itinerary and timing, it was our first Christmas/New Year cruise. Principally it meant that we spent time in a warmer climate without having to fly and saw the New Year fireworks at Funchal. On the latter, the captain did an excellent job in manoeuvring the Balmoral to a really good viewing location notwithstanding all the other cruise liners and the fireworks (and the on-board New Year celebrations) were also excellent. The service aboard was generally very good.
Product: We chose the cruise for the itinerary and - helped by the weather -weren't disappointed.

Service: Balmoral had just come out of dock and at the back of the ship it resembled a building site; both swimming pools were not in use due to bad weather whilst ship was in dock and this work was done on the first few days of our cruise; in Lido Lounge a new restaurant was built which was fascinating to watch; service in Avon Restaurant was below par and slow - were waiters all new as their standard is normally very high. Palms lunch time did not seem to have a variety of different cold foods and it seemed the same day in and day out. Cruise ships at this time seemed to all have the flu and cough bug; cannot filters or something be put on the airconditioning to prevent the germs spreading. Balmoral was not alone in this. Balmoral's hygiene was to a high standard. I wish passengers could be told to listen to what the Captain is saying during the evacuation drill on boarding. We have been many times so know procedure but would still like all passengers to listen in case there is a change as they can renew acquaintances later rather than chatting and drowning out what is being said for our benefit and safety. Greatly appreciated the Master's concern for our safety and comfort especially when he took advantage of the weather forecasts leaving Lisbon early to ensure we had a smoother passage through the Bay of Biscay and onwards to Southampton.
Product: It was a fantastic firework display again in Madeira. Enjoyed the trip to the Pyramids and Poison Gardens in Tenerife and the Cactus Garden and cave in Santa Cruz. Only one comment, the steep steps to the cave were understated for some and one lady was badly affected by a sudden attack of vertigo but managed to climb back up the ten or so steps she had gone down. The handrail was low down but a marvellous trip all the same.
