Glass factory, Travemunde, Germany

Tour A - Highlights of Holstein

  • Relax as you travel through the German countryside
  • Visit Gottorf Castle
  • Discover the medieval village of Holm
Price£70.00-£80.00
DurationApproximately 5 hours
Walking level 2 - moderate walkingModerate walking

Enjoy a trip through the countryside of Schleswig-Holstein, which is the only German Federal State bordered by two seas and Germany’s border to Denmark. This county consists of seven islands, two seas, 300 lakes and the world’s busiest artificial waterway; the Kiel Canal.

From the quayside in Kiel, set off to experience the unique scenery of Schleswig-Holstein with its variations of rolling hills, marsh, coastal and sandy heathland (the term ‘Holstein’ derives from Old Saxon, meaning ‘the land of those who dwell in the wood’).

Start with a brief panoramic overview of Kiel to see the highlights of this beautiful city, before making your way into the countryside. Schleswig-Holstein combines Danish and German aspects of culture – farms and castles in the countryside are the best example for this tradition.

Your panoramic tour will bring you to Gottorf Castle, situated on an island in the firth of Schlei, about 40 kilometre from the Baltic Sea. Gottorf Castle, a museum today, is the ancestral home of the Holstein-Gottorf branch of the House of Oldenburg, a royal dynasty and once the residence of the local rulers. Here you will pay an inside visit to the State Archaeological Museum which is an archive for 120,000 years of history in the state and a showcase for current research. During your visit you will “meet” The Osterby Man or the Osterby Head which is a  bog body of which only the skull and hair survived. It was discovered in 1948 by peat cutters to the southeast of  Osterby, Germany, not far from the castle. The hair is tied in a Suebian Knot  suggesting the body dates back to the late Iron Age or Roman Period.

After this visit you will continue your tour to Schleswig, a city that lies in the bay of the Schlei, an inlet of the Baltic Sea, before paying a short visit to the quaint fishing village Holm, located just outside Schleswig. Here you will have a brief photo stop and use the opportunity to gain a glimpse of this unique medieval village’s town centre, which consists of a cemetery surrounded by traditional fisherman houses before your return journey back to Kiel and your awaiting ship.

The fascinating Hanseatic city of Wismar is one of Northern Germany’s prettiest and most historic destinations. Given World Heritage Status in 2002 by UNESCO, Wismar is world-renowned for its fine examples of Brick Gothic structures, wonderful gable houses and charming Market Square. Spread out over 10,000 square metres, the square is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Germany and is arguably one of Wismar’s greatest attractions. It is surrounded by beautiful 14th century to 19th century architecture of various styles, including Gothic and Romanesque, while the wrought-iron Wasserkunst Fountain standing proudly in the centre of the square is not to be missed.

After an approximately 75 minute drive, you will arrive in Wismar where you will commence your guided walking tour of the city. Get a glance of this quaint UNESCO Hanseatic city as you pass along the cobbled streets with Gothic houses, Baroque buildings and Renaissance facades. The Classic Rathaus (Town Hall), the Water Tower, the historic drainage system, merchants’ houses from the Middle Ages, are just some of the fascinating buildings you can admire.

In need of a rest, enjoy a beer tasting session accompanied by a traditional German snack (Schmalzbrot or Pretzel) within the nostalgic atmosphere of the “Brauerei am Lohberg”, a brewery and pub that has been in existence since the Middle Ages. Here you will also get the chance to sample the medieval “Mumme” beer. Though it is not as strong as it used to be, it is still very tasty.
