St. George's Island, Bermuda

Introduction to St. George's Island, Bermuda

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there is plenty to see in this charming town. Amble along Water Street, home to boutique shops and galleries; explore the World Heritage Centre; visit beautiful Somers Garden and historic King’s Square; and relax on Tobacco Bay Beach. A classic slice of the UK in the sun.

An UNESCO World Heritage Site, the town of St. George has been largely untouched for over 100 years, thanks to the inhabitants’ insistence that the island must continue to look and feel the same as it always has.

The old town is full of original architecture and historic fortifications that illustrate St. George’s importance in the development of the British Military between the 17th and 20th century. As you wander through the alleys and along the gorgeous coast line, it feels as though you have stepped back in time, a world away from the ‘concrete jungles’ in modern towns and cities around the world.

Somers Wharf - a shopping and dining complex that sits on the historic waterfront - is a relatively new development and home to various shops, boutiques and bars, offering a more modern experience away from the Old Town centre.

Named after the crystal clear water that flows through the cave and forms a lake, the azure blue water is so clear that you can see the cave's floor which is 16 metres (55 feet) below the surface. This intriguing and fascinating attraction was actually discovered by accident when two local boys, who were searching for a lost ball, stumbled across the cave in 1907. Descending 81 steps, you will step out onto a wooden pontoon which has been constructed over the waters of the lake. Be sure to have your guide point out the original entrance that the boys lowered themselves from, which appears as a small skylight in the cave roof.

Following your visit to the Crystal Caves, your driver/guide will take you on a wonderful overview of the exclusive residential area of Tuckers Town. Real estate in this area begins at around 10 million dollars and culminates in Billionaire’s Row, where you will see homes of some of the world's wealthiest people, including the waterfront estates of American businessman Ross Perot and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

St. George’s is rich in history, a treasure trove for sightseers and recently was declared a World Heritage Site, so what better way to explore this island than by foot!

On this fully narrated walking tour, you will view the island’s most noted historic and cultural sites, including art galleries, libraries, private gardens and churches. St. George is a maze of quaint narrow streets with names like Featherbed Alley and Old Maid’s Lane.

St. George’s also played a role in the American Revolution. Bermuda depended on the American colonies for food, and when the war began, supplies grew dangerously low. Without the approval of the British Bermudian governor, George Washington and Henry Tucker struck a deal; gunpowder for food under the cover of night in Tobacco Bay.

Your final stop will be to take in views of St. Peters Church before your tour ends in the Towne Square; a good place to possibly unfold a map and explore on your own.

Enjoy a comprehensive tour of Bermuda as you embark on a scenic drive through six of the island’s nine parishes.

The history of Bermuda truly begins in St. George, the oldest inhabited town of English origin in the New World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a brief orientation, you will have some time at leisure to explore historic St. George, Bermuda's original capital. As you walk the cobblestone streets of this thoroughly enchanting and quaint old town, you will be immersed in 400 years of culture and history. You may choose to stroll down the quiet alleyways, simply enjoying St. George’s relaxed ambience and tranquil gardens, or perhaps visit some of the historic buildings and churches. Don't miss St Peter's Church, which dates back to the 1620s and is the oldest Anglican church in the Western Hemisphere. Numerous pubs and colourful shops also beckon for your attention, and a visit to the perfumery offers visitors the opportunity to see how flowers are turned into fragrant perfumes.

Re-joining your transport, you will journey along a picturesque stretch of shoreline, and admire sights such as Bermuda's famous pink sand beaches, including magnificent Horseshoe Bay and Church Bay. A photo stop will be made at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, which is believed to be one of the oldest cast iron lighthouses in the world. The lighthouse was completed in 1846 and stands 35 metres (117 feet) from the base to the lantern — its beam can be seen 64 kilometres (40 miles) out to sea. It is from this highly advantageous location that some of the most expansive and picturesque views of Bermuda can be found.

Travelling on, you proceed to the Royal Naval Dockyard. Your route will first take you over Somerset Bridge —which was erected in 1620, and is the smallest drawbridge in the world — before you pass through the quaint village of Somerset. Upon arrival at the Royal Naval Dockyard, your driver/guide will point out a number of the attractions here before you are given the opportunity to explore the area further at leisure. A thriving tourist area, it is home to a craft market, numerous shops and dining venues for you to enjoy (at your own expense), and you may also wish to explore the Maritime Museum or Arts Centre during your time here.

Continuing, your scenic journey will take you to the island’s capital city of Hamilton. En route, you will pass by the impressive Botanical Gardens. This 36-acre park houses a vast array of plants, flowers, herbs and trees; as well as Camden House, a stately Georgian mansion that serves as the official residence of the Premier of Bermuda.

Your picturesque journey continues along the North Shore Road, travelling through the parishes of Devonshire and Smith before crossing over the Flatts Inlet Bridge. This narrow channel, where the waters of Harrington Sound and the Atlantic Ocean merge, makes for quite a spectacular sight as the tides rush in and create swirling riptides.

In 1948 the Bermuda government closed down the railways after struggling with maintaining the 22 mile track and transformed the route into a fantastic trail for walkers and cyclists. It is considered one of the most scenic trails in the area and offers a wonderful way of exploring the island from one end to the other.

Throughout your hike, your guide will stop at various points of interest and provide an informative commentary on this natural, historical, man-made environment. Discover more about Bermuda’s flora and fauna as you enjoy spectacular views from the many viewpoints along the trail, including the Fort Scaur, the 17th Century Mott Family Estate and Bermuda’s smallest and oldest private chapel.
