Souda Bay is a natural harbour on the north-west coast of Crete, overlooked by the hills of the Akrotiri peninsula on the north and the Drapano area in the east.

Close by is Souda Town, a fairly new settlement that offers a range of good restaurants and cafés. As it is regarded as an important international port and a military base, there are no great beaches here, but you can find an abundance of them in nearby Akrotiri on the island of Santorini.

In the mouth of Souda Bay are two islets, the largest of which is Souda Island, where you can take a guided tour that takes in fortress ruins and long-abandoned caves once used by pirates. It was also the location for boat-chase scenes from the James Bond film “For Your Eyes Only.”

Also within easy reach are the British and Commonwealth War Cemetery and the Moronis River Lagoon (also known as Pera), which is a protected wetland and a superb place for a spot of bird-watching.
