Rønne (Ronne), Bornholm

Marina and white church in Ronne, Bornholm, Denmark

Introduction to Rønne (Ronne), Bornholm

Rønne offers a historical charm with its cobblestoned streets and cross-timbered houses. Although large amounts of the town were destroyed during the war, it was wisely rebuilt during the post war years, and many buildings look older than they actually are. During the hotter months Rønne offers vast stretches of sand, both to the south and north of the town.

This tour will allow you to sample some of the tastes of Bornholm – including herring, wine and beer.

You begin with a drive through the lush countryside to the Lille Gadegård Vineyard – a very idyllic place close to the town of Åkirkeby. The vineyard, founded in 1995, is the largest in Denmark. It started by producing strawberry wine and first harvested grapes in 2002. In fact, Denmark was not officially approved as a wine producing nation until August 2000. During your visit to the vineyard you can enjoy a tour of the premises, and finish with a wine tasting.

Next, travel to Svaneke, located on the east coast of Bornholm, where you stop at Svaneke Brew House, located in an old merchant's house dating back to 1750. Here you will see the beer making process and, naturally, enjoy a taste as well.

Then continue on to the little fishing village of Gudhjem. Literally meaning ‘Home of God’, this quaint village of only 780 permanent residents clings to the side of a rocky bay on the north eastern side of the island. Fishing and whaling were the main sources of income but have since been replaced by tourism. Gudhjem was also the first place to start smoking and exporting herrings – a tradition that was to become the signature delicacy of the island. Step inside one of the local smoke houses to enjoy a traditional smoked herring tasting in this lovely setting.

After your gastronomic experience, return through lush countryside to the pier.

This is a scenic tour across the island to two of the loveliest fishing villages. Your knowledgeable guide will tell you about this special corner of Denmark and the way of life here.

The journey across the middle of the island will take you to the charming little fishing village of Gudhjem – with narrow, winding and very steep streets and half-timbered houses, many with thatched roofs. In Gudhjem there will be some time ay leisure to stroll on your own.

Following the scenic coastal road from Gudhjem, you will reach Svaneke - another lovely fishing village on the eastern coast of the island. It was founded in 1555 and is the smallest merchant town in Denmark with only about 1,100 inhabitants. The merchant status brought in wealthy merchants who built the large trading posts still found in the village today and expanded the harbour. Again, you will have time at leisure to walk about and enjoy the quaint village and the many shopping opportunities, of which quite a few may appeal to the peckish: Svaneke Chocolaterie, Svaneke Brew House, liquorice shop, fudge maker, bonbon hut and many more, all featuring homemade treats.

The drive back to Rønne will take you through Almindingen – the third largest forest in Denmark which was planted in the 1800’s when extensive logging had all but left the island barren.

Welcome to Rønne – the capital of Bornholm and an important trading port and ferry hub in the Baltic. The town can trace its origins to the Viking Age when people first settled around the natural harbour, but it did not evolve into a proper town until the 1300’s when it first gained market town rights from the crown. A knowledgeable local guide will meet you on the quayside and walk with you into Rønne and you will explore the secrets and charms.

The town boasts many exceptionally fine half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. In between them you will find the so-called ‘bomb-houses’ – brick houses built to replace those that were bombed by the Russian Air Force in May 1945 after the Germans refused to surrender to the Red Army. To help the rebuilding of Rønne, and other towns on the island, Sweden donated 300 wooden houses – most of which still are used as homes today.

Walk through the winding cobblestone streets and enjoy the quaint and tranquil atmosphere of Rønne. Along the way you will pass the oldest church in town, the St Nikolaj Church, and Store Torv - the central square and former military parade grounds. Also pass the oldest active, provincial theatre in Denmark, built in 1823, and many other notable landmarks. Your walk will also include a visit to Erichsens Gaard - a cultural-historical museum housed in one of the best kept commoner’s houses in Rønne from 1806. Step back in time as you stroll through the immaculately kept historical rooms and enjoy the sprawling garden.

Your tour will end in the town, giving you the chance to remain here, time permitting, for further exploration and enjoyment, or you may choose to return directly to the quayside.

This is a scenic tour through the picturesque farmlands of the tiny Baltic Island belonging to Denmark. Travelling by coach you go through Rønne before crossing the island through Almindingen – one of the largest forest areas in Denmark.

The first photo stop is at Hammershus, an old fortress on the northern tip of Bornholm. It is the largest castle ruins in Northern Europe. For 500 years Hammershus was the castle for the various rulers of the island and was rebuilt and expanded on several occasions. In 1743 Hammershus was finally abandoned as a stronghold.

Another stop is made at the charming little fishing village of Gudhjem – with narrow, winding and very steep streets and half timbered houses, many with thatched roofs. Enjoy some time at leisure here to explore on your own.

A short drive will take you just outside Gudhjem, to visit one of the many glass blowing studios that the island is famous for – Baltic Sea Glass. The Studio and Gallery are located in a converted egg farm. Although mainly designing and producing functional tabletop glassware, they also create unique works for gallery and museum exhibitions.

Your tour concludes with a visit to a round church – one of the four round churches to be found on Bornholm, where you find half the total number of round churches in Denmark.
