Pensicola, Spain

Introduction to Peniscola, Spain

Peniscola, Spain

Known locally as the City in the Sea, the old town of Peniscola is a fortified seaport, built on a rocky peninsula, and is joined to the mainland by only a narrow strip of land. Also known as the “Gibraltar of Valencia”, it is located 2 hours south of Barcelona on the Mediterranean coast.

The fortress here dates back to the 14th century and was the residence of Pope Benedict XIII. It was used when Anthony Mann’s El Cid was partially filmed there, and the town and castle were used to represent Valencia. Now, the castle is a popular tourist attraction, and the surrounding beaches are a thriving family holiday resort.

Peniscola is a town with a fishing tradition, so fish and seafood are excellent gastronomic choices, and the classic paella is strongly recommended.

The town has a number of sumptuous beaches, the finest of which is the north beach, which is around 5 kilometres long. This calm beach is perfect for swimming and sunbathing, as well as being wheelchair friendly, and is backed by a palm tree lined promenade. The southern coastline is steep and rocky, dotted with tiny beaches and isolated coves.
