Narsaq, Greenland

Introduction to Narsaq, Greenland

If your looking for stunning icebergs, breathtaking fjords and astonishing arctic wildlife, Narsaq - one of Greenland's most picturesque towns - is the perfect destination.

Located on a vast, unusually green stretch of land in the southernmost part of Greenland and surrounded by glistening icebergs, incredible fjords and waters teaming with seals, salmon and whales, Narsaq is a picturesque Arctic paradise.

With plenty of native wildlife to watch and vast landscapes with constantly changing waters to photograph, Narsaq is one of Greenland’s best locations for sightseeing. The best vantage points are easy to find and the town is easily navigated on foot, though taking a boat trip around the island is highly recommended as it offers you the chance to get even closer to the glaciers.

Walking level 2 - moderate walkingModerate walking

Explore this small Greenlandic town on foot and get a feel of everyday life in this remote part of the world.

You will be welcomed ashore by a guide and will then walk for fifteen minutes or so from the harbour to reach the town. The town is home to some 1,600 inhabitants and you stop at the fish market which sees the fishermen delivering their catch daily.

At a small hill in the centre of town, lies the beautiful little church, built in 1927. The design was inspired by the traditions of German Moravian missionaries. A short introduction to the Greenlandic religion will be given.

Your tour will end with a visit to the Town Museum which will show you a large collection of Norse and Inuit exhibits and artefacts, housed in the main building. There is also a fine geology exhibit. Once you have viewed the exhibits, you may choose to spend more time in the town or may prefer to return straight back to your ship.

Boat Tour

Narsaq has a direct view of the inland ice and icebergs floating in the fjords just outside the town. This tour will take you, by boat, to view them from different angles and see them closer up.

Icebergs vary in shape and size – from almost invisible, transparent cubes to enormous, mountain sized floating islands. The colours are also out of this world – ranging from blue to turquoise, and chalk white. It is amazing when you remember that only one tenth of an iceberg is visible above the water. The icebergs break off the glaciers from the Greenland Ice Cap. Approximately 85% of Greenland is covered by the icecap, made by snow that has fallen over millions of years. When you put an ice cube in your drink in Greenland, it might be 100,000 years old.

You will board a small local boat for a cruise along the scenic Brede Fjord into the Narsaq Sund and between the sculpture-like icebergs. The tour offers an impressive experience of the arctic scenery, especially the amazing icebergs.

Having seen the icebergs up close, the boat will return you to Narsaq.
