Lajes das Flores is a great place from which to explore the stunning landscapes of Flores, regarded by many as the most beautiful island in the Azores. Included in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves, the island is smothered with lush green forest – the perfect haven for an abundance of diverse fauna and flora – and boasts deep valleys, huge cliffs, tumbling waterfalls, pretty gardens and volcanic hot springs.
Even just a short journey from Lajes das Flores will lead you to simply breathtaking wonders, including the Lagoa Funda and Lagoa Comprida crater lakes; the basalt rocks of Pedras dos Frades; and the 500 metre high Rocha Alta, Flores Island’s largest cliff. Elsewhere on the island, the iconic Rocha dos Bordoes basalt formation, magnificent Waterfall of Ribeira Grande and Groto de Enxareus cave are not-to-be-missed.
Within the parish of Lajes das Flores itself there’s a number of attractions to discover too. The pretty Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosario is well worth visiting to admire its fine façade, while the site of the Fort of Santo Antonio – unfortunately demolished in 1868 – offers superb views.

- Admire the natural beauty of the island
Named after its abundant flora, Flores is often regarded as the prettiest island within the Azores archipelago. A rugged terrain with flowers growing in the deep canyons and waterfalls casting hues of blues and green as they splash down to the sea make this a beautiful area to explore.
Your tour begins with a journey to Rocha dos Bordóes, a vertical basalt cliff that formed as the erupted lava cooled. The striking vertical strands make this an imposing natural structure from which you will have a unique vantage-point to admire your beautiful surroundings.
Continuing, your journey will take you past an array of natural features including caldeiras, fajas, rivers, waterfalls and valleys, before stopping at Fajã Grande, a rural Portuguese parish. Spend time here admiring the quaint buildings and admiring the scenery before resuming your drive through the countryside. A photo opportunity will be made at Funda, a beautiful lake surrounded by sand and protected by the surrounding mountains all of which are covered in hydrangeas, take time to admire the surroundings and absorb the serenity before re-joining your tour vehicle and heading back to your awaiting ship.
