Join glass artist Malin Mena for an exclusive lesson in how to make beautiful Nordic glass and bring your personal souvenir home.

A short drive will take you to the Glass Tower – home of Malin Mena’s glass blowing studio. Walk along the winding path up Nättrabys old oak hill to the red cylinder shaped brick building – the old local water tower from the 1950’s. The cavity has been filled after a long beauty sleep and is now sparkling with life. Up here, at Malin Mena, you will not only hear about the history of the art of glass blowing, you will also get the chance to try it for yourself! Create your own hand blown glass and take it home with you!

Malin Mena trained at the College of Arts and College of Fine Arts in Stockholm. She has also studied at America's most renowned glass school, Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle. Her professional career began at one of Sweden’s most famous and prestigious glassworks - Orrefors. Malin is an internationally recognized glass artist and has worked in France, Denmark and the United States.

You will meet the four elements required for glass blowing - wind, water, sand and fire - in an almost enchanted world. The exclusive group will receive tuition before you embark on creating your work of art. While at the Malin Mena Glass, you will also receive coffee or tea and cake.

After your unique, creative experience, you will reluctantly leave and enjoy a short sightseeing tour of Karlskrona as you head back to your ship with your treasured possession.

The city of Karlskrona was constructed in the 17th century as Sweden’s naval base. Its unique location, situated in the middle of an archipelago six kilometres from the mainland, gives a spacious sense to the city and breathtaking views.

Starting from Kungsbron, which is the pier area and adjoining street to the south east of the town centre, you will have some photo opportunities – looking over the Island of Stumholmen, the Bastion Aurora and the Governor's Residence to name a few. Travel a short distance and stop at the expansive Stortorget – the main square surrounded by the neo classical Town Hall, the baroque Frederiks Church, and the round Trinity Church, built for the area’s German community. You have the opportunity to take photos of these – external views only. Continuing by coach, you will stop to visit the nearby Admiralty Church which was built in 1685 and is the largest timber church in Sweden. In front stands the legendary figure of Old Rosenbom, his outstretched arm begging for alms. Continue your drive to see the district of Björkholmen, with its picturesque little 17th century workmen’s houses.

Your tour then takes you to the Old Naval Shipyard, where Sweden’s proudest sailing fleet was built and maintained, and more than 400 ships were launched. Take a brief walk in the area, to admire the interesting 17th century buildings as well as the Polhem dock – one of the world’s oldest dry docks. You will learn about rope making, which was an essential part of ship construction during the era of the sailing navy. Your final visit will be to the Naval Museum which has a full scale gun-deck of an 18th century ship and an underwater observation tunnel.

Karlskrona is the capital of the province of Blekinge, and is an important naval port with a strong maritime tradition. This walking tour allows you to enjoy fully this unique world heritage city.

Start your guided walk at Kungsbron where the Admiralty Church built in 1685 stand - the largest timber Church in Sweden. In front of the Church is the legendary figure of Old Rosenbom, his outstretched arm begging for alms. A short inside visit will be made, before continuing your walk towards the expansive Stortorget, or main square. Stortorget is surrounded by the neo classical Town Hall, the baroque Frederiks Church from 1744 and the round Trinity Church, built for the German community in the town in 1709. These churches were designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger who also designed the Royal Palace in Stockholm.

You will also enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and Swedish pastry in one of the charming cafés in the city before visiting the district of Björkholmen with its picturesque little 17th century workmen’s houses.

As well as visiting Karlskrona and the Naval Museum, this tour takes you to the idyllic village of Kristianopel - well preserved and situated in a lovely coastal position.

Begin with a visit to the modern and impressive Naval Museum which has a long tradition stretching back to 1752 when Adolf Fredrik, then King of Sweden, decreed that a ships model room be established in Karlskrona. Ever since, the Museum has been charged with the collection and conservation of artefacts which document the history and development of the Swedish Navy. In many respects, the Museum houses a unique collection, which includes a collection of figureheads of the 18th century.

Continue with a brief tour of Karlskrona itself with the chance to take photographs. Continuing by coach, stop to visit the Admiralty Church, built in 1685 and the largest timber church in Sweden. In front stands the legendary figure of Old Rosenbom, his outstretched arm begging for alms. Drive on to idyllic Brändaholm, situated on the secluded Island of Dragsö, to the south west of Karlskrona, which is a popular recreation area for the residents of Karlskrona. Here you will see typical Swedish allotment cottages with beautiful adjoining gardens, which were created in the 1920’s and are remarkably intact and untouched. You will have a guided walk around the gardens.

Then head into the countryside and the picturesque little village Kristianopel. Originally built in the 1600’s - the Danish King Kristian IV had a fortress built here in 1603 and named it after his newborn son – also named Kristian. The suffix ‘opel’ was added to give the town a cosmopolitan ring similar to Constantinople

. With its defensive wall, old houses and narrow streets together with restaurants, cafés and a picturesque harbour area, Kristianopel is well worth exploring.

Kungsholm Fortress has guarded the entrance to Karlskrona for over 300 years. Inaccessible by land, a boat trip takes you to the fortress whilst also admiring the stunning harbour and exotic gardens

Start with a delightful boat ride, of approximately 30 minutes, through the archipelago to reach the fortress and begin with a guided tour. Kungsholm Fortress was built in 1680 and is now a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has a unique circular harbour as well as a small museum and a park with exotic plants and trees brought back from the Navy’s many expeditions around the world. The fortress is still a military zone and includes many interesting buildings such as the Donjon, the North Redoubt and the Main Powder Magazine. You will visit the museum and listen as the guide tells many enthralling stories from the fortress’ past.

Take the boat back to Karlskrona for a visit to the Naval Museum which has a full scale gun deck of an 18th century ship and an underwater observation tunnel. Your return to the tender pier will be on foot.
