Introduction to Hvar, Croatia

Queen of the Croatian Dalmatian Islands, and considered one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world; Hvar has a rich history of Mediterranean architecture, tradition and nature, not to mention mild winters and pleasant summers.

Widely regarded as one of the ten most beautiful places on earth, Hvar – the Queen of the Dalmatian Islands – has beautiful sandy beaches, untouched lagoons and a rich history of Mediterranean tradition, history and architecture.

With mild winters, pleasant summers and a host of historic monuments and buildings to admire, Hvar is a joy to explore. The 14th century cathedral, located on the eastern side of Pjaca – the town square – is built on the site of an early 6th century Christian church and is well worth a visit as it houses many late Renaissance paintings for visitors to look at. Away from the town centre there are plenty of beach hikes and walking trails to enjoy. A trip to the nearby Pakleni archipelago is highly recommended. Here you will find secluded white sand beaches and many pine groves to explore.

Discover the highlights of Hvar as you embark on a panoramic coach tour of the island.

Hvar was voted one of the world’s top ten most beautiful islands by Condé Nast and the UK’s Traveller magazine. The island is renowned for its mild climate and lush subtropical vegetation, and is rich in cultural and historical monuments. In fact, ruins from antiquity can still be seen in most settlements on the island.

Your tour begins with a pleasant walk through the picturesque streets of Hvar Town to the coach terminal. Here you will board your coach for a drive to the town of Jelsa, situated in a bay in the middle of the north coast of Hvar Island. Jelsa is the only place on the island with an abundance of fresh water, and as a result, there is more luxuriant vegetation here than surrounding areas.

Following a photo stop in Jelsa, during which, weather permitting, you can view the islands of Scedro and Korcula and the tip of the Peljesac peninsular, you continue your drive to Stari Grad, the oldest town in Croatia. The small town is famous for a large bay that has long inspired artists and poets. A crowning glory in this majestic countryside, the town itself is the historic heart of the island, with roots dating back to the 2nd century BC.

En route back to Hvar Town, you will stop briefly at Fortica Fortress, which was built in the middle of the 16th century above the Old Town. From here, you can savour unforgettable views of Hvar and the Pakleni Islands beyond. Upon arrival back into Hvar Town, you can enjoy time at leisure
