El Ferrol, Spain

Introduction to El Ferrol

El Ferrol is a city in La Coruña provincia, in the comunidad autónoma (“autonomous community”) of Galicia, in extreme northwestern Spain on the Ferrol Inlet of the Atlantic Ocean.

Named after the lighthouse that marks the entrance to the city’s harbour, Ferrol has been one of northern Spain’s most important seafaring cities since the time of Bourbon rule and is now a major naval shipbuilding and fishing centre.

The city is compact, quiet and isn’t as busy as many other Spanish cities, giving it a welcoming, relaxing feel. The charming narrow streets are easy to navigate and are lined with small shops and plenty of places to sit down and enjoy a bite to eat or a cup of coffee. The La Magdalena district - officially declared an area of national historic and artistic interest - is the prettiest and most interesting part of Ferrol’s city centre. Here you will discover rows of parallel streets that were created during the city’s enlightenment and two large squares that feature beautiful 18th century houses and modernist style buildings.

Away from the city centre, Ferrol’s harbour and port – where impressive warships are built, repaired and dismantled – is well worth visiting to catch a glimpse of the city’s important maritime industries at work.

Ferrol has always been linked to the sea, with a tradition of seafaring and fishing, but in the 16th century the harbour began to be frequented by ships of the Royal Navy. It was King Philip V (and later Fernando VI and Carlos III) who promoted the construction of a great arsenal and royal shipyard. It became the most modern arsenal and shipyard in Spain and probably in Europe, and Ferrol became one of the most important cities of Galicia.

Your tour commences with a drive to Ferrol’s Military Dockyard (arsenal). It is the principal support base for warships and naval installations in the Cantabrian Maritime Zone, stretching between the borders of France and Portugal. Its main missions are the inspection of naval construction, industrial maintenance management, and procurement and port services. The arsenal also has an extremely important cultural heritage which is intimately linked to the history of Ferrol.

Continuing, you visit the Shipbuilding Museum, Exponav, with its exhibitions on the history of shipbuilding and the different materials used for naval shipbuilding, its physical qualities, fabrication technology and fitting processes to form complex structures.

Being an important seafaring village in the Mediterranean led to the expansion of the city and, next to the ancient village of Ferrol Vello, where cruise ships dock today, you will find the district of A Magdalena that appeared to host the high society of Ferrol such as naval officers, traders, technicians and officials. Before driving back to the pier enjoy a walking tour through one of the best examples of modernist construction in Spain. It is the historic and artistic centre of Ferrol and showcases one of the best urban development projects following the guidelines of the geometric and rationalist architecture of the 18th century.

Discover Betanzos, which boasts one of the best preserved old quarters in Galicia.

Departing the quayside you will be invited to enjoy a walking tour of Ferrol, a city of fishing and industry. The birthplace of important soldiers and sailors, Ferrol was first built as a fishing village and over the years became a city of great naval and military power. Thanks to its natural port it is one of the world´s most beautiful and best protected. History of the city is traced back to the Phoenicians, Greeks, Visigoths and even the Romans. You will see one of the best examples of neoclassic urbanism including the Church of San Julian and the Church of Socorro, as well as impressive modern buildings such as the Swiss Hotel.

Continuing on you board your coach for the drive to the village of Betanzos. The village conserves one of the most beautiful and spectacular monumental centres in the whole country, flanked by the rivers of Mandeo and Mendo at the foot of the estuary that bears the city´s name. It was the capital of one of the ancient provinces of the kingdom of Galicia, and was even the region´s capital when King Garcia set up his court here. The village attained great splendour in the medieval and modern periods, thanks to the development of commerce and activity in its port. Head to the 18th Century Pazo de Mariñán, perhaps one of the best Pazos in Galicia and Spain, and here you will see its unique gardens, which include shade created by banana trees, walnut trees from India and huge eucalyptus trees. The path leading up to the Pazo is a paved road that is bordered by two rows of trees. The Italian influence in the garden is seen in the stairway connected to the terrace. It gives a spectacular view of the sea and of the main garden, which is an architectural jewel.

You will then re-board your coach for your drive back to the pier and your awaiting ship.

La Coruña is a maritime city thanks to its location on a small peninsula in the heart of an extensive gulf known by the Romans as Portus Magnus (the great port of the Artabri).

After an approximate 45-minute drive to La Coruña, you arrive in the city centre, where you will enjoy a guided walk of the town. You will wander around the Maria Pita Square (named after the lady who thwarted Sir Francis Drake's attack on the city) and admire the Town Hall, a large, modernist building dating from the early 20th century, which has an impressive facade, complete with three domed towers.

Next, you will enjoy some free time to explore the area independently before returning to your coach for a relaxing panoramic drive. Your journey will take you past the Gardens of Los Cantones, which were built on reclaimed land. Keep your eyes peeled for The Galleries - houses whose facades were built by fishermen out of wood and glass, and whose windows reflect the sunlight. These houses gave La Coruña the nickname of 'City of Glass'. You will also pass San Anton Castle, built on a small island in the bay, which is today connected to the mainland. The castle was originally built to house sufferers of contagious diseases, before it served as a fortress and prison.

Continuing, you will stop briefly at the Tower of Hercules for an outside visit of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was built in the second century AD and is the only Roman lighthouse in the world still used for its original purpose of guiding ships into the harbour of La Coruña. After a little time walking around the monument and the park, you will proceed along the promenade, passing the newly refurbished aquarium, the Museum of Mankind and the Millennium Obelisk, which is made from glass. Your final stop will be at Mount San Pedro where, weather permitting, you can enjoy the impressive views of the ocean, the Tower of Hercules and the city of La Coruña itself.

Following your panoramic drive, you travel back to Ferrol and your awaiting ship.
