Cozumel, Mexico

Introduction to Cozumel, Mexico

Lying 20km off the Yucatan coast, the island of Cozumel has over 40 shrines to Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of the moon, the sea and fertility. Visitors can snorkel the coral reefs and relax on the sandy beaches; shop in the colourful downtown stores; become immersed in Mayan history; or visit the Chankanaab National Park, known for its beach, reef and botanical garden.

Lying 20km off the Yucatan coast, the island of Cozumel has over 40 shrines to Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of the moon, the sea and fertility. Many of them are carved from coral – the island is part of the Great Maya Barrier Reef – and archaeologists regularly find small clay dolls which were offered to the goddess. Other important Mayan ruins are at San Gervasio including the remains of some buildings and a small pyramid.

The small town of San Miguel is relaxed and friendly and there are plenty of cafés, bars and shops. The Museo de la Isla de Cozumel has very interesting exhibits about the island itself and its flora and fauna, as well as an explanation about the formation of the coral reef. There are also Mayan artefacts and various items from its time as a Spanish colony, including cannons, swords and armour.

Chankanaab is the number one attraction in Cozumel and offers plenty to explore and enjoy. Located within the National Marine Park, this haven of relaxation and adventure boasts stunning beaches, beautiful botanical gardens, incredible reefs and a vast lagoon that’s home to a huge iguana population.

Following a short transfer from the pier to El Cedral, the staging point for our adventure, we will receive a safety briefing before boarding our vehicle. Each Xrail buggy has automatic transmission and seats up to two passengers – this is not a ride for the faint hearted but if you can drive a car, you will be able to take charge of one of these buggies.

We shall drive for approximately 45 minutes through the jungle, before reaching the Jade Caverns, where we will be able to discover a botanical oasis of orchids, vanilla and palm trees. Inside the caverns we will have approximately 30 minutes to perhaps cool off by taking a dip in the fresh emerald waters or simply relax as we admire the cavern’s unique formations of stalactites and exotic surroundings.

Following our free time, we shall return to our Xrail buggies for our return journey to El Cedral.
