Enjoy a sailing experience on a time-honoured schooner – the perfect environment in which to soak up the Caribbean atmosphere!

Departing from the quayside, board the traditional West Indies sailing schooner, the Friendship Rose, for a light breakfast of coffee, tropical fruits and chilled juices, before setting sail from Admiralty Bay.

Travelling along the rugged coast of Bequia, where traditional boat building skills of old are still practised, your crew will point out where this very schooner was built by hand on the beach. Further along the coastline you will see the Caribbean homes set amongst amazing rock formations and arches as you sail past Moonhole.

Moonhole’s unique architectural style is based on the concept of living in harmony with nature and taking full advantage of the Caribbean environment. To achieve these goals, the flintstonesque houses are built on sites overlooking the sea. Their primary building materials are local stone, exotic woods, cement, whalebone and treasures of dubious value recovered from the sea. Once construction begins, the houses tend to evolve on their own – no plans are drawn. Instead the shape of the finished house is governed by the contours of the land, immovable rocks and trees – thus each house develops a personality of its own.

During your journey, you may like to lend a hand to the crew, watch for dolphins, whales or turtles or simply lie back on the canvas deck cushions under the billowing sails and relax.

After a short sail past the fishing villages on the southern side of Bequia, you will anchor just off the shore of the uninhabited island of Petit Nevis – the site of Bequia’s old whaling stations. Enjoy the opportunity to take a trip ashore in the tender to explore the island, where you may like to hike to the top, admire the views over the exclusive island of Mustique, take a dip or even snorkel the rocky formations just off the shore.

Following a refreshing drink back onboard, you will be invited to sit back and relax for the return sail to the pristine Princess Margaret Beach, where you will stop for lunch. A two-course Caribbean lunch will be served on deck accompanied by chilled wines. With the Friendship Rose anchored just off the beach, there is plenty of time to relax, take a stroll along the beach, snorkel the crystal clear waters or simply relax in a hammock onboard whilst listening to the captain’s tales.

Inevitably, it will be time for your schooner to return to Admiralty Bay. From here you can decide to proceed straight to your awaiting ship or perhaps visit the local boutiques and market stalls in the colourful harbour town of Port Elizabeth.

Take in the highlights of Bequia as you embark on an informative island drive.

Your tour begins with a scenic drive through Port Elizabeth, the island’s only town, before heading up towards Mount Pleasant. Here you can marvel at breathtaking views of your ship, the wider Caribbean Sea and the surrounding Grenadine islands – cameras are a must-have to record the spectacular vistas.

Continue up the Atlantic Coast, with its alternating ocean views and beautiful roadside floral scenery, as you make your way to the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary. Mr Orton G King, a retired fisherman and owner of this sanctuary, has spent most of his time tending to the precious and endangered Hawksbill turtles. Listen as he spins tales of these ancient inhabitants of the sea, and answers any questions you may have. You can also discover how you might be able to join the conservation project.

Next, visit a screen-printing shop and bar, where if you are lucky you may be able to see the artists at work. Enjoy a refreshing drink here before heading back into town.

The quaint little town of Port Elizabeth will then beckon you back to explore the vegetable market and souvenir stalls, where brightly coloured items wave cheerfully in the breeze. The rest of your time here will be yours to enjoy the area at leisure.
