Then, after a momentous navigation of the awe-inspiring Iron Gates gorge, taking in the Great Kazan and the famous Decebalus rock sculpture, Bulgarian gems await. Remote Vidin is your gateway to the medieval Baba Vida Fortress, one of Europe’s best-preserved fortifications, and Ruse – Bulgaria’s ‘Little Vienna’ – is sure to charm with its picture book of extravagant architecture and monuments. From Bulgaria, the picturesque Lower Danube is your route into Romania, passing through stunning scenes of vast floodplains, forests and islands along the way. Five days of Romanian adventure will then offer rich rewards. Galati boasts impressive historic churches, palaces and gorgeous botanical gardens awaiting discovery, though it is possible to tour to the Moldovan village of Valeni – famed for its wines and traditional cuisine – from here too. There’s also calls to the culture-rich, historical ports of Cetate and Turnu Severin, while the pièce de résistance is a visit to St Gheorghe, from where you take a boat safari tour of the blissful Danube Delta, an unspoilt natural wonderland. Back along the Danube, you return to Serbia and stop at Novi Sad, perhaps to sample local wine and delicious dishes, and see the unmissable Petrovaradin Fortress in all its glory, before it’s finally back to Hungary. You can learn of the history of paprika and enjoy delicacies made with Hungary’s ‘red gold’ in Kalocsa; then revel in the abundant attractions of Budapest upon your return to this UNESCO-listed gem, such as the Buda Castle complex, the impressive parliament buildings and the Millennium Underground Railway.
