Cruising by St. Kilda
It has been said that there is no other place like St Kilda, and when you cruise by the islands of this volcanic, UNESCO-listed archipelago it is easy to see why. The sight of St Kilda – known as the ‘islands at the edge of the world – is always dramatic and something to behold, with its rolling green hills, rugged cliffs, peaks and towering sea stacks set amongst the waves and swells of the Atlantic Ocean.
Uninhabited since 1930, when the archipelago’s remaining 36 islanders left citing ‘an unsustainable way of life’ on the islands, St Kilda is now the perfect habitat for thriving flora and fauna. Around one million seabirds live and breed here, including the UK’s largest colony of Atlantic Puffins, while St Kilda even has its own unique wren species. Having your binoculars to hand as you sail the archipelago is a must, to spot its wonderful array of wildlife.
