Cruising by Downpatrick Head

Downpatrick Head, Mayo, Ireland
Downpatrick Head, Mayo, Ireland

Part of, and a Signature Discovery Point on, the spectacular Wild Atlantic Way, Downpatrick Head is without doubt one of the scenic highlights of Ireland's western coast.

A towering, 126-feet-high sea stack, Downpatrick Head is magnificent, in size and scenery. The sheer, rugged rocks, shaped by the weather over thousands of years, reach up from the rough Atlantic tides, and are a stunning example of Mother Nature at work. Atop the head you'll ruins of a church founded by Saint Patrick, whom the seastacks are named after.

Look out for striking Dun Briste stack close to the edge of the cliffs too; this section of the head was separated from the rest by rough weather in 1393 and is a unique sight.
