You’ll experience the many sides of Spain and Portugal as Balmoral guides you to a collection of diverse destinations. Volcanic landscapes, gorgeous gardens, astonishing natural wonders and more await at five stunning islands, before the cultural, historical and architectural sites of charming mainland cities are revealed.

A relaxing long weekend at sea will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to explore Madeira. After arriving in the capital, Funchal, you’ll be afforded time to seek out the attractions of Portugal’s ‘Garden Island’; highlights include the magnificent Cabo Girão, a towering sea cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and the enchanting Monte Palace Tropical Garden. Four days in the Canaries follow, visiting four uniquely impressive Spanish islands. The ‘Pretty Island’ of La Palma will beg for your exploration during a call into Santa Cruz de La Palma; an astonishing UNESCO-listed wonderland of varied landscapes awaits. Choose to tour to the San Antonio Volcanic Park perhaps, to see wonders such at the Teneguia Volcano up-close; or uncover the secrets of ‘enchanted’ laurel forests. Then there’s Tenerife, offering plenty of unforgettable sights and experiences. Majestic Mount Teide, towering over Tenerife’s volcanic landscape, is a remarkable sight and the views on offer from Spain’s highest peak are not-to-be-missed. Elsewhere, the pyramids and poison gardens of Güímar are well worth a visit. [ReadMore]

Gran Canaria is the perfect place to indulge in a day of relaxation. This glorious island is renowned for its year-round warmth and particularly impressive beaches; from Las Palmas you could head to Maspalomas where rolling golden sand dunes will tempt you into hours of sunbathing. Alternatively, you may opt to continue your island exploration with a venture into the picturesque Agaete Valley or the dense Los Tilos forests. The final island on your itinerary is Lanzarote. A call at Arrecife will offer you the chance to head to the breathtaking Timanfaya National Park and the soaring peaks and open lava fields of the Fire Mountains for unmissable photo opportunities; or go in search of César Manrique’s iconic creations, such as Jameos Del Agua Cave. Before returning home, Balmoral diverts to two fantastic mainland cities. You’ll stop at the ancient city of Cádiz, situated on Spain’s sunlit Andalusian Atlantic coast, for sultry flamenco and delicious traditional tapas. Jerez, known for its sherry and equestrian art, can be visited on tour from Cádiz too. In Portugal, Lisbon beckons. Admire the architectural treasures of the Portuguese capital, such as Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, and be sure to visit the famous Pasteis de Belém to sample traditional egg custard tarts.

Refurbished in 2017, Balmoral is the largest of Fred. Olsen's smaller, friendly ocean-going cruise ships – with capacity for up to 1,350 guests – yet is still small enough to navigate narrow waterways such as Kiel Canal and bring inspirational sights and experiences closer to you. Like the rest of the fleet, Balmoral retains a warm, welcoming atmosphere and features comfortable accommodation and lounges, stylish restaurants and plenty of open-deck space.

Real ships
We don’t have boastful megaships. We take immense pride in our fleet of smaller-scaled vessels that retain the style, ambience and understated quality of a country house hotel.  We ensure they remain contemporary too: from winter 2016 to spring 2018 the whole fleet underwent dry dock refits to further enhance the facilities for guests. With the fifth generation Fred. Olsen as Chairman and 170 years of seafaring heritage behind us, we believe we’ve found the perfect formula for you to get the best out of your holiday with us.

Smaller but spacious
A smaller ship doesn’t mean less space; far from it. Each room is comfortably sized, with all that you’ll need to enjoy your holiday. In fact, our rooms are comparable to those on some of the mammoth cruise ships. While our vessels are on a more accessible scale, you can have just as much private space.  With fewer people on board it’s easy to find a quiet spot to relax in peace with a drink or a good book. There’s room to stretch out by the pool and you can get ashore more quickly too. And when you’re ashore, you’re seeing the best of each port of call with hundreds – not thousands – of others, giving you a much more authentic experience.

Service with a smile
Each member of the Fred. Olsen team has been carefully selected for their warm and welcoming personalities. The quality of our people, supported by training and development, ensures they will give you a great holiday: in guest feedback our staff are always the most highly-rated aspect of the whole experience.
