Your cruise at a glance

Hand-crafted highlights

Our journey planners have designed this cruise to visit destinations boasting historical connections to navigation and exploration. Your first stop will be Lisbon, where you can take in sites such as the Monument to the Discoveries, the Jerónimos Monastery and its maritime museum, and Belém Tower. Cádiz is well-placed for uncovering the fascinating history of Christopher Columbus, as the famous explorer departed on two voyages from the city. Elsewhere, you can unearth different ruling influences in Gibraltar, Andalusia, and La Coruña – home to the Tower of Hercules, believed to be the world’s oldest lighthouse.

Highlights

The Belem tower, Lisbon, Portugal

Famous Landmarks

This particular cruise will offer guests the chance to see a number of famous landmarks, both ashore and via our Scenic Discoveries Signature Experience. From La Coruna, take the chance to experience the Santiago de Compostela – the final destination on the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage walk, where St. James is said to be buried. Monuments in Lisbon have many tales to tell of navigators, writers and explorers. The striking Monument to the Discoveries commemorates the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator; while the Belem Tower is a powerful reminder of Portugal’s seafaring history as it was used the embarkation point for navigators such as Vasco de Gama, who established a maritime trade route to India.

Spanish dancers, Flamenco

Local Culture

The pastimes and cultures of Portugal and Spain are provided in abundance, with opportunities to delve deeper into the origins of Flamenco in Andalusia, and learn steps from this sultry and fiery dance. In Malaga, visit a local olive farm to learn how its oil is produced; and in Lisbon, learn how to make the popular Pasteis de Nata – and taste them too. Fado music is the folk music of Lisbon’s rustic area, affectionately known as the ‘Lisbon Blues’, hauntingly mournful ballads tell stories of lost sailors and broken hearts, and how Portugal dealt with their adventurers heading to sea in search of treasures and new lands.

Torro de Hercules light house, La Coruna, Spain

Maritime History

Maritime history links most of the destinations on this cruise, albeit for different reasons. In La Coruna, witness the remarkable Tower of Hercules, both from on board Borealis - accompanied by commentary from our on board team, and from a shore tour. The world’s oldest working and best preserved lighthouse, dating back to Roman times, it stands proudly at the entrance to the city’s harbour. Roy Paul – our maritime guest speaker will be on board to give you an insight into the Portuguese Age of Discoveries, so that visits to the Belem Quarter and navigators memorials will give you a deeper understanding of the Golden Age; and David Durie – former Governor of Gibraltar will give talks on the history of the country and its geographical location.
