The cruise at a glance

The Olsen Way Highlights

Reap the benefits of visiting Norway at the end of spring and start of summer, when the waterfalls are still strong, but the temperature is milder. Borealis will take you on scenic diversions along Lysefjord – only possible on smaller ships – and Maurangerfjord, past the sprawling Fureberg Waterfall. You’ll also get to cruise Norway’s two longest fjords – Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord. Haugesund is your gateway to the tumbling Langfoss Waterfall and the national monument, said to be the burial place of Viking King Harald Fairhair. Elsewhere, Flåm offers the chance to see archetypical fjordland scenery on a boat tour along the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord or aboard the world-famous Flåm Railway.

A viking longhouse on the coast of Norway.

A Viking King who united a nation

King Harald Fairhair was the longest reigning monarch in Norwegian history, serving almost 60 years on the throne, and is credited with being the first Viking King of Norway, who unified the nation into one kingdom after winning the Battle of Hafrsfjord. The most important royal seat was considered to be in Avaldsnes, where King Harald felt most safe as he aged, and was also where he died. He is said to have been buried at the Haraldshaugen Monument, located near Avaldsnes Village and Karmøy Island – a culturally rich historical area of Norway.

Summer mountain Langfossen waterfall on a sunny day

Langfoss Waterfall

Langfoss Waterfall is widely believed to be one of the ten most beautiful waterfalls in the world. With a fall of over 600 metres tumbling down the hillside as it meets with the aqua coloured Akrafjord below, it’s surrounded by steep mountains and lush green hills, making for a remarkable contrast against the white water of the falls, and giving the impression of a bride’s veil when viewed from a distance.

Flamsbana - a famous trainline from Myrdal to Flam, Norway

Flåm Railway

Winding through mountainous terrain en-route to Myrdal, the Flåm Railway has been described as one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys. The scenery of the valley changes from green trees and the sparkling river to seemingly impassable landscapes, and through numerous tunnels before arriving at the top where it connects with the Bergen Line, for trains running between Bergen and Oslo.
