Balmoral

Your cruise at a glance

Hand-crafted highlights

This special springtime cruise to Norway has been designed to take in the natural wonders and awe-inspiring beauty of the Norwegian Fjords when the waterfalls are at their strongest. Balmoral will deviate away from the more direct cruising routes to show you the sprawling Fureberg Waterfall and to sail Åkrafjord – home to the tumbling Langfoss Waterfall – and Lysefjord, both of which are restricted to only smaller ships. Beautiful Lysefjord is home to Preikstolen (Pulpit Rock) and Kjeragbolten, where a large boulder is wedged into a crevice high above the fjord. Åndalsnes is your start point for capturing outstanding mountainous landscapes during a ride on the Rauma Railway. Other particular highlights on your journey include a scenic cruise past maginifcent Hornelen, Europe’s highest sea cliff.

Fjord Scenery

The magnificent fjords of Norway are awash with dramatic landscapes with towering cliffs plunging into deep, narrow fjords which have been carved over time by ancient glaciers. Stretching for almost 26 miles, the long and narrow Lysefjord is as deep in places as the mountains are high, and is home to Preikestolen – Pulpit Rock, which juts out over the fjord and stands 604 metres tall. Maurangerfjord is a more serene and lesser-known gem of the Norwegian fjords, with lush green cliffs and glistening still fjord waters. Furebergfossen is a dramatic waterfall that tumbles down into the fjord over a road through the lovely countryside. Do make time to enjoy a RIB boat tour from Balmoral of Hardangerfjord, where you’ll have the opportunity to soak up the spectacular views of Eidfjord, Hardangerbrua and the surrounding villages.

Views over Bergen, Norway

Fjordland Way of Life

The Nordic concept of getting outdoors – Friluftsliv, is how many Norwegians live their lives. Translating as ‘open-air living’, it means getting out in the air, whatever the weather, to enjoy local forests, water and greenery; and is deeply ingrained within their culture. In Bergen, join us for a tour and go hiking like a local and experience some of Norway’s most spectacular views, before hearing stories of traditional farming life in Norway. Or, from Eidfjord, enjoy a guided tour of a local cider farm to hear how the soil and climate impact of its production. You’ll be joined on this cruise by Ellie Somme, who grew up in a small town nestled between Molde and Andalsnes, who will speak about the way of life in Norway, through myths, traditions and costumes.

Briksdal Glacier, Norway

Geology of the Fjords

Briksdal Glacier is nestled within towering mountains and drops down into the narrow Briksdalen, having shaped the local landscape over thousands of years. Smooth rocks are covered in lush green vegetation, with the striking blue of the glacier suspended in between. When the glacier melts in the warmer months, it creates the beautiful Briksdalbrevatnet Lake at its base. Geologist Tony Pont, will be on board Balmoral with you, speaking about the Fjords of Norway and how they came to exist; having visited the country many times.
