Balmoral

Your cruise at a glance

The Olsen Way Highlights

In just nine nights, you will have the chance to spot the natural phenomenon of the Northern Lights from the comfort of your ship. There are plenty of immersive winter activities to give you a taste of life in the Arctic wilderness, from dog sledding (during which you can even mush your own team of huskies through the snowy landscapes) to ice fishing with a Tromsø local. Our itinerary planners have also included several scenic cruising highlights, with Balmoral passing sights such the Seven Sisters mountain range and Torghatten – the mountain with a hole through its centre. Your ship is also small enough to take a scenic shortcut through the Tjeldsundet Strait. You'll be joined on this cruise by astronomers from Go Stargazing, who will hold sessions out on Balmoral's decks to help you spot planets and galaxies in the night sky.

Highlights

Guests looking out to Northern lights from deck

The Northern Lights

As Balmoral crosses the Arctic Circle to visit a selection of destinations in Northern Norway, your chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis are maximised as our journey planners have timed your visit to witness the swirling ribbons of green, blue and pink illuminating the skies at the very best time of year. Join our Go Stargazing experts on deck to learn more about the science behind the natural phenomenon; or embark on a scenic tour to chase the Northern Lights, where light pollution is at a minimum amongst the snowy landscapes.

Go Stargazing

Go Stargazing

You will be joined on this Balmoral cruise by a team of friendly and approachable professional and amateur astronomers, who will be out on deck to provide fascinating sessions on how to identify planets, see constellations by laser-guided tours, and understand how our ancestors interpreted the sky for nautical use and ship navigation. You'll have the chance to learn incredible facts about our starry skies and the universe beyond; and with the activity of the Sun increasing at this time of the year, the chances of seeing the Northern Lights are higher.

Life in the Arctic

Life in the Arctic offers guests the opportunity to discover more about how the extremely cold temperatures shape daily life for those who live in the region. The indigenous Sami people have a culture which is deeply connected to the natural world, so you are perfectly placed to enjoy tours to learn more about their traditions. You will be joined on board Balmoral by David Nikel, a British ex-pat living in Norway who has travelled extensively around the country and will hold ‘An Audience With’ session. David is a senior contributor to Forbes.com on all things Scandinavia and the Nordics, and is the author of the Moon Norway travel guidebook.

Railway in Sweden, winter time

World War Two History of Arctic Norway

Narvik, with its ice-free port, was a key target for German forces and therefore played a major role in the early months of the Second World War, which resulted in intense battles throughout the region. The naval defeat of the Germans in Narvik remains one of Great Britain’s greatest victories in Scandinavia; and meant that the iron ore - transported from Sweden to Norway, was protected from falling into the German’s possession. Paul Brown, maritime Historian, author and former university lecturer, will join you on this cruise to deliver a series of vividly illustrated talks on warfare and maritime exploration, and naval battles in Norway during the Second World War.
