The Olsen Way Highlights

Along with your visit being timed to see puffins before they migrate, this rewarding journey has been designed by our Journey Planners to show you Iceland’s remarkable scenery formed by geothermal activity. Akureyri is well-located for humpback whale-watching tours. You can also search for marine life from the comfort of your ship, assisted by conservationists from wildlife charity ORCA. Elsewhere, tours to Vigur Island (reachable from Ísafjörður) and a visit to the hard-to-reach island of Heimaey present the best chances of spotting puffins. Awe-inspiring wonders of nature can be seen throughout your cruise, including the spurting Strokkur Geyser, the powerful Goðafoss Waterfall, and rugged, volcanic scenery.

Highlights

Godafoss waterfall, Iceland

Mighty waterfalls

With over 100 to its name, Iceland is home to an abundance of waterfalls. These waterfalls are created by a combination of large mountain glaciers, high mountains and Iceland’s location across the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates – giving way to an ever-changing landscape. From Akureyri, take the chance to visit Goðafoss Waterfall, known as the ‘Waterfall of the Gods’. Goðafoss is formed by the glacial River Skjálfandafljót, and falls from a height of 12 metres over a ledge of basalt rock into a canyon carved by glacial movement during the last ice age.

ORCA on board

You’ll be joined on this cruise by representatives from the wildlife charity ORCA, who will assist you with spotting feeding cetaceans and birdlife, from on board Borealis and ashore. It may be possible to see humpback whales and puffins, as our journey planners have timed this cruise to visit Iceland when the whales are in northern waters, and before the puffins head south in August. Puffins are often seen at Eyjafjörður, Iceland’s longest fjord, as the largest colony in the world is located on Grimsey Island.

Geothermal activity

On this cruise, learn more about the geothermal landscapes surrounding Reykjavik by joining a tour to the active volcano at Mount Hengill, which last erupted 2,000 years ago, before heading on to Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant. You’ll have the opportunity to learn first-hand about the geothermal energy here as you’ll be joined by a power plant worker, who will explain about the plants sustainable energy developments
