Reward yourself with this French river cruising experience and enjoy an immersive holiday combining memorable journeys along picturesque, size-restricted waterways – made possible by Black Watch’s smaller dimensions – and calls into mesmerising destinations, including overnight stays in historic Rouen and beautiful Bordeaux.

In total, four compelling cities feature on this diverse itinerary, and each presents plenty of unforgettable experiences. Up first in Lorient, a city fascinatingly rebuilt after the devastating effects of World War II. There is rich wartime, maritime and shipbuilding heritage to uncover here; you could take in the Keroman Submarine Base and a selection of interesting museums before Black Watch continues on to Bordeaux via the Gironde and Garonne rivers. Your ship will sail straight into the ‘Pearl of Aquitaine’ to bring a wealth of attractions closer to you, including the remarkable historical sites of the UNESCO-listed centre. Calihau Gate, the Cathédrale Saint-André, the Grand Théâtre, Place de La Bourse and much more will be just the length of the gangway away, and an overnight stay affords you time to explore Bordeaux in-depth and at your own pace. You’ll have time to visit the Cité du Vin museum for an invigorating insight into French wine culture too; or even take a tour to the world-renowned vineyards of the gorgeous Medoc region. After two rewarding days in Bordeaux, Rouen beckons. En route to Normandy’s enchanting regional capital, you’ll experience scenic cruising of the winding River Seine in daylight hours. Simply relax on board Black Watch and enjoy the view as countryside scenes of rolling valleys, lush-green fields and pretty communes are revealed. Once docked in Rouen for another enriching overnight stay, a plethora of options will be at your disposal. Perhaps explore the city in search of highlights including Place du Vieux Marché – where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake – and the magnificent Gothic-style Cathédrale Notre-Dame; take the chance to tour to Claude Monet House and Gardens; or head to Paris on a romantic evening trip to the iconic French capital. Whatever you choose to do, another relaxing journey along the Seine will be something to look forward to when it is time to depart Rouen and head for stunning St Malo, the final stop on this fabulous French adventure. With its fascinating Old Town and fine examples of Romanesque and Gothic-style architecture, St Malo is a delight for sightseeing. This formerly fortified island is also your gateway to spectacular Benedictine abbey and national heritage sites of Mont St Michel.

Black Watch is the ultimate home-from-home at sea: spacious with a friendly, familiar feel and providing a traditional cruise experience. Refurbished at the end of 2016, the 804-guest Black Watch features stylish new décor, fittings and furniture, plus the new Black Watch Room restaurant.

What's more, new soft furnishing, smart TVs and mini-bars enhance the accommodation on board, while the cinema has been upgraded too. Despite all these new features, Black Watch still retains her sleek, intimate style and has a welcoming ambience - just like the rest of the Fred. Olsen fleet.

Real ships
We’re not interested in gimmicks like zip wires, climbing walls or celebrity chefs. We don’t have boastful megaships. We take immense pride in our fleet of smaller-scaled vessels that retain the style, ambience and understated quality of a country house hotel.  We ensure they remain contemporary too: from winter 2016 to spring 2018 the whole fleet underwent dry dock refits to further enhance the facilities for guests. With the fifth generation Fred. Olsen as Chairman and 170 years of seafaring heritage behind us, we believe we’ve found the perfect formula for you to get the best out of your holiday with us.

Smaller but spacious
A smaller ship doesn’t mean less space; far from it. Each room is comfortably sized, with all that you’ll need to enjoy your holiday. In fact, our rooms are comparable to those on some of the mammoth cruise ships. While our vessels are on a more accessible scale, you can have just as much private space.  With fewer people on board it’s easy to find a quiet spot to relax in peace with a drink or a good book. There’s room to stretch out by the pool and you can get ashore more quickly too. And when you’re ashore, you’re seeing the best of each port of call with hundreds – not thousands – of others, giving you a much more authentic experience.

Service with a smile
Each member of the Fred. Olsen team has been carefully selected for their warm and welcoming personalities. The quality of our people, supported by training and development, ensures they will give you a great holiday: in guest feedback our staff are always the most highly-rated aspect of the whole experience.
