As the festive season excitement begins, start your celebrations with visits to three enchanting European cities that really come to life at the ‘most wonderful time of the year’. German cities are famed for their festive spirit, and your visit to Hamburg is sure to be special. Awaiting you are traditional Christmas markets and charming wooden huts adorned with twinkling lights and selling food, confectionery and handicrafts, creating a warmth amidst the seasonal chill; explore and enjoy a mug of steaming Glühwein as you browse for unique gifts. Make the most of your time to see sights such as St Nikolai Church and the Chilehaus, and enjoy a winter stroll along the banks of the River Elbe too, perhaps.[ReadMore]

Christmas-time charms will delight you in the capitals of Norway and Denmark too. Your visit to Copenhagen, will be one to remember; the legendary Tivoli Gardens is a ‘must-visit’ at this time the year, with its displays of light and decoration and stalls offering everything from Nordic handicrafts to tempting local delicacies. The impressive Christiansborg and Amalienborg Palaces and picturesque Nyhavn district are also not-to-be-missed. You’ve an opportunity to see Oslo when it’s transformed into a winter wonderland of Christmas markets, fairs and decorations, and perhaps take in highlights including Vigeland Sculpture Park and the National Gallery, home of see Edvard Munch’s The Scream. What’s more, you’re in for memorable scenic cruising too, sailing the Kiel Canal, River Elbe and past the Olsen Family home as Balmoral navigates Oslofjord.

In recent years, we have seen a new era emerging in cruising.

There is a trend for everything to get bigger and busier, and for a cruise to be seen as an alternative to a large luxury resort, with a limitless flurry of activity. But this is not for us. Find out more

1. WE ARE PROUD TO SAIL OUR OWN COURSE

We are free to do things a different way because we are family-run. Of course some people enjoy the bigger, busier cruises, but it is not for everyone, and it is not for us. We prefer to do things, 'The Olsen Way'.

2. SMALLER IS BETTER

We have fewer guests, so the atmosphere on board our ships is always warm and civilised. Our smaller ships allow us to visit the more interesting places that the world has to offer.

3. HAND-CRAFTED, NOT MASS PRODUCED

We pride ourselves on putting our all into the Fred. Olsen cruise experience. Our itineraries are created from scratch every year, our service is genuinely personal and each and every area of our ships is designed by hand.

Balmoral, carrying up to 1,350 guests is small enough to navigate narrow waterways such as Kiel Canal and bring inspirational sights and experiences closer to you.

Like the rest of the fleet, Balmoral retains a warm, welcoming atmosphere and features comfortable accommodation and lounges, stylish restaurants and plenty of open-deck space.
