The highlights are seemingly endless on this simply unforgettable festive sailing aboard Balmoral. While those back home will be enduring the typically cold, wet weather of December, you’ll be in for a magical Christmas and New Year celebration from start to finish, visiting fine European cities and a string of stunning sun-kissed islands at the most magical time of the year.

The festivities on board your ship will be in full swing from the moment you set sail from Southampton however, after calling into Lisbon – the attraction-packed Portuguese capital – on Christmas Eve, the celebrations will really kick into gear during a memorable Christmas Day at sea. As you sail towards the Canaries you can forget about the usual stress and strain of the big day and let Fred. Olsen’s attentive staff take of everything as you enjoy festive food, fun and excitement with your friends, loved ones and fellow guests. Boxing Day will also be spent relaxing on board before Balmoral takes in four gorgeous Canary Islands on consecutive days as the year draws to a close. You’ll have the chance to sample a taste of the authentic Canarian lifestyle in pretty Gran Tarajal on the island of Fuerteventura, where you could also uncover the beautiful golden sands of Jandia Beach. Some of the Canaries’ very best beaches will also await your discovery in Gran Canaria, with Las Palmas serving as your gateway to the oasis-like dunes of Maspalomas. Picturesque Puerto de Mogán and the charming towns of Teror and Arucas are well worth a visit too. [ReadMore]

Your island-hopping adventures continue in Tenerife, the largest island in the archipelago. Santa Cruz has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and an array of tapas bars and enlightening museums; but if venture further you won’t be disappointed by the breathtaking sight of mighty Mount Teide – the world’s third highest volcano. A short stay in San Sebastian will also allow time to discover several monuments and buildings harbouring La Gomera’s historic links to Christopher Columbus. Madeira is where you’ll say goodbye to 2018 and welcome the arrival of the New Year in style. After arriving in Funchal early on New Year’s Eve, you can take the day to discover an abundance of highlights such as the floral levada walking trails and the Cabo Girão sea cliff; then board step back on board Balmoral for a fantastic night of celebration, culminating with the chance to watch one of the world’s largest New Year’s firework displays from the decks of your ship. Before sailing home you’ll also head to Spain to begin 2019 with a rewarding exploration of pretty La Coruña.

Balmoral is the largest of Fred. Olsen's smaller, friendly ocean-going cruise ships – with capacity for up to 1350 guests – yet is still small enough to navigate narrow waterways such as Kiel Canal and bring inspirational sights and experiences closer to you. Like the rest of the fleet, Balmoral retains a warm, welcoming atmosphere and features comfortable accommodation and lounges, stylish restaurants and plenty of open-deck space.

Rest assured, all of the following comes as standard on every Fred. Olsen cruise:

Real ships
We’re not interested in gimmicks like zip wires, climbing walls or celebrity chefs. We don’t have boastful megaships. We take immense pride in our fleet of smaller-scaled vessels that retain the style, ambience and understated quality of a country house hotel.  We ensure they remain contemporary too: from winter 2016 to spring 2018 the whole fleet underwent dry dock refits to further enhance the facilities for guests. With the fifth generation Fred. Olsen as Chairman and 170 years of seafaring heritage behind us, we believe we’ve found the perfect formula for you to get the best out of your holiday with us.

Smaller but spacious
A smaller ship doesn’t mean less space; far from it. Each room is comfortably sized, with all that you’ll need to enjoy your holiday. In fact, our rooms are comparable to those on some of the mammoth cruise ships. While our vessels are on a more accessible scale, you can have just as much private space.  With fewer people on board it’s easy to find a quiet spot to relax in peace with a drink or a good book. There’s room to stretch out by the pool and you can get ashore more quickly too. And when you’re ashore, you’re seeing the best of each port of call with hundreds – not thousands – of others, giving you a much more authentic experience.

Service with a smile
Each member of the Fred. Olsen team has been carefully selected for their warm and welcoming personalities. The quality of our people, supported by training and development, ensures they will give you a great holiday: in guest feedback our staff are always the most highly-rated aspect of the whole experience.
