Escape to Portugal, the Canaries and Madeira for a relaxing and rewarding pre-Christmas getaway filled with the sun, sea, sand and sights of breathtaking islands and attraction-packed cities. Volcanic wonders, beautiful gardens, iconic landmarks and much more awaits, while in true Fred. Olsen style, you’ll also have the chance to experience a very special event – the spectacular Geminid Meteor Shower.

Sailing first to the shores of northwest Spain, you can indulge in a day of sightseeing in Vigo. [ReadMoreMob]This Galician gem is a delight to explore, with its charming Old Quarter – awash with grand façades and gothic churches – and picturesque bay, overlooked by the 17th century Fortress of Castro. Sailing onwards, you’ll then head to Madeira, Portugal’s gorgeous ‘garden island’, just as the magical Geminid Meteor Shower reaches its incredible peak. Stopping overnight in Funchal affords you the best chance to see the darting lights of spellbinding ‘shooting stars’ as they streak across the sky – a simply unforgettable experience. Your extended visit allows ample time for daytime exploration too: you could trail Madeira’s unique levada walking routes, for views of stunning, unspoilt landscapes; absorb the vibrant colours and sweet scents of tropical gardens; or even visit the famous Cabo Girão to revel in the astonishing views on offer from atop one of the world’s highest sea cliffs. Following on from your memorable visit to Madeira, your island-hopping continues with calls to two blissful islands in the Canaries. With a full day in Tenerife, there’s plenty of time to discover the many highlights of this volcanic gem. You could unravel the mysteries of the Pyramids of Güímar; tour to mighty Mount Teide, to gaze in the awe at the sheer scale of Spain’s highest peak; or simply take your weight off at the beach – Santa Cruz is your gateway to it all. Volcanic wonders await you in Lanzarote too: perhaps explore the lunar-like volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote’s Timanfaya National Park and the dramatic Fire Mountains, or seek-out the glorious saltwater lagoon of Jameos Del Agua Cave. Finally, as you head for home, Black Watch will also take you to the Portuguese mainland, for feast of iconic landmarks and traditional flavours. Enjoy a day in Lisbon, to delve into the city’s rich maritime history and perhaps enjoy an authentic taste of Portugal with quintessential egg custard tarts; and take the opportunity to tour from the port of Leixoes to Oporto, renowned for its world-famous port wine cellars, mix of baroque and neo-classical architecture, and postcard-perfect riverscapes.

Real ships
We don’t have boastful megaships. We take immense pride in our fleet of smaller-scaled vessels that retain the style, ambience and understated quality of a country house hotel.  We ensure they remain contemporary too: from winter 2016 to spring 2018 the whole fleet underwent dry dock refits to further enhance the facilities for guests. With the fifth generation Fred. Olsen as Chairman and 170 years of seafaring heritage behind us, we believe we’ve found the perfect formula for you to get the best out of your holiday with us.

Smaller but spacious
A smaller ship doesn’t mean less space; far from it. Each room is comfortably sized, with all that you’ll need to enjoy your holiday. In fact, our rooms are comparable to those on some of the mammoth cruise ships. While our vessels are on a more accessible scale, you can have just as much private space.  With fewer people on board it’s easy to find a quiet spot to relax in peace with a drink or a good book. There’s room to stretch out by the pool and you can get ashore more quickly too. And when you’re ashore, you’re seeing the best of each port of call with hundreds – not thousands – of others, giving you a much more authentic experience.

Service with a smile
Each member of the Fred. Olsen team has been carefully selected for their warm and welcoming personalities. The quality of our people, supported by training and development, ensures they will give you a great holiday: in guest feedback our staff are always the most highly-rated aspect of the whole experience.

Black Watch is the ultimate home-from-home at sea: spacious with a friendly, familiar feel and providing a traditional cruise experience. Refurbished at the end of 2016, the 804-guest Black Watch features stylish new décor, fittings and furniture, plus the new Black Watch Room restaurant.

What's more, new soft furnishing, smart TVs and mini-bars enhance the accommodation on board, while the cinema has been upgraded too. Despite all these new features, Black Watch still retains her sleek, intimate style and has a welcoming ambience - just like the rest of the Fred. Olsen fleet.
