After the hectic festive period, relax and settle into the New Year indulging in the comfort and classic style of small ship Balmoral, and the sunshine, scenery and soothing warmth of beautiful Atlantic Ocean islands, on this rejuvenating escape from the UK’s cold and wet winter gloom.

As you journey south, a stop at Lisbon to discover the Portuguese capital’s engrossing architectural and cultural attractions will whet your appetite before visiting the first of five gorgeous Macaronesian gems on your itinerary, Madeira. Docking close to the heart of Funchal brings highlights – such as floral scenes of the fragrant Monte Palace Tropical Garden, accessed by cable car from the island’s capital – within easy reach. Take your exploration beyond Funchal though and lush landscapes and incredible vistas, discovered via unique walking trails, await you.

A fabulous four-days of island-hopping in the Canaries is your chance to experience the very best of this sun-soaked archipelago. During your Canarian adventure, you could uncover the mysterious Pyramids of Güímar; ride a cable car up mighty Mount Teide for astonishing views; or simply unwind on glorious beaches in Tenerife, while Lanzarote is a land of natural wonders for you to explore. Trail Timanfaya National Park’s surreal, lunar-like landscapes to see fascinating rock formations; or perhaps marvel at the Jameos del Agua caves’ remarkable exhibit of geology and architectural design. For glorious warmth and opportunities to unwind on the oasis-like sands of Maspalomas Beach, or enjoy a gentle stroll around the charming towns of Puerto de Mogán and Santa Brígida, a call at Gran Canaria is sure to be a highlight of your time away from it all.

Balmoral, carrying up to 1,350 guests is small enough to navigate narrow waterways such as Kiel Canal and bring inspirational sights and experiences closer to you.

Like the rest of the fleet, Balmoral retains a warm, welcoming atmosphere and features comfortable accommodation and lounges, stylish restaurants and plenty of open-deck space.

In recent years, we have seen a new era emerging in cruising.

There is a trend for everything to get bigger and busier, and for a cruise to be seen as an alternative to a large luxury resort, with a limitless flurry of activity. But this is not for us. Find out more

1. WE ARE PROUD TO SAIL OUR OWN COURSE

We are free to do things a different way because we are family-run. Of course some people enjoy the bigger, busier cruises, but it is not for everyone, and it is not for us. We prefer to do things, 'The Olsen Way'.

2. SMALLER IS BETTER

We have fewer guests, so the atmosphere on board our ships is always warm and civilised. Our smaller ships allow us to visit the more interesting places that the world has to offer.

3. HAND-CRAFTED, NOT MASS PRODUCED

We pride ourselves on putting our all into the Fred. Olsen cruise experience. Our itineraries are created from scratch every year, our service is genuinely personal and each and every area of our ships is designed by hand.
