Two days in Lisbon are ideal for exploring Portugal’s pretty capital in depth. After marvelling at the magnificent Ponte 25 de Abril Bridge from Black Watch, you’ll have ample time to uncover the city’s highlights at leisure. [ReadMoreMob]You could see architectural wonders and monuments evoking extensive maritime heritage, such as the Jerónimos Monastery, Tower de Belem, Padrão dos Descobrimentos; visit the famous Pasteis de Belém bakery, world renowned for its delicious pastel de nata tarts; and catch live performances of Fado music at one of the vibrant bars. Your visit to Lisbon is specially-timed to catch the city’s St Anthony’s Day Sardine Festival too. On Friday, your first day in the capital, you’ll find the air is filled with the scent of grilled sardines and the sound of celebration, as the friendly locals throw carnival-style street parties to mark the occasion. You’re in for an unique cultural experience. [ReadMoreDesk]

Elsewhere, on the sun-kissed, craggy Atlantic coast of the Algarve, you’ll also enjoy a relaxing day at Portimão. This charming, carefree town is perfect for a leisurely stroll, especially at Praia da Rocha – the beautiful waterfront area. Praia da Rocha is where you’ll find bustling Tomas Cabreira Avenue, a lively promenade packed with bars and restaurants serving locally sourced seafood, as well as stunning stretches of inviting golden sands. The town centre, with its traditional 19th and 20th century architecture, is a delight to explore too. Finally, a call at the port of Leixoes presents you with an opportunity to continue your city exploration at nearby Oporto. Portugal’s UNESCO-listed second city is well worth visiting to explore its fascinating historic centre, the Ribeira District. Wander the narrow, meandering lanes and you’ll uncover plenty of architectural gems and world-famous port wine cellars. If you choose to visit Oporto, don’t miss the chance to take a tranquil cruise on the Douro River aboard a traditional Rabelo boat too.

Real ships
We don’t have boastful megaships. We take immense pride in our fleet of smaller-scaled vessels that retain the style, ambience and understated quality of a country house hotel.  We ensure they remain contemporary too: from winter 2016 to spring 2018 the whole fleet underwent dry dock refits to further enhance the facilities for guests. With the fifth generation Fred. Olsen as Chairman and 170 years of seafaring heritage behind us, we believe we’ve found the perfect formula for you to get the best out of your holiday with us.

Smaller but spacious
A smaller ship doesn’t mean less space; far from it. Each room is comfortably sized, with all that you’ll need to enjoy your holiday. In fact, our rooms are comparable to those on some of the mammoth cruise ships. While our vessels are on a more accessible scale, you can have just as much private space.  With fewer people on board it’s easy to find a quiet spot to relax in peace with a drink or a good book. There’s room to stretch out by the pool and you can get ashore more quickly too. And when you’re ashore, you’re seeing the best of each port of call with hundreds – not thousands – of others, giving you a much more authentic experience.

Service with a smile
Each member of the Fred. Olsen team has been carefully selected for their warm and welcoming personalities. The quality of our people, supported by training and development, ensures they will give you a great holiday: in guest feedback our staff are always the most highly-rated aspect of the whole experience.

Black Watch is the ultimate home-from-home at sea: spacious with a friendly, familiar feel and providing a traditional cruise experience. Refurbished at the end of 2016, the 804-guest Black Watch features stylish new décor, fittings and furniture, plus the new Black Watch Room restaurant.

What's more, new soft furnishing, smart TVs and mini-bars enhance the accommodation on board, while the cinema has been upgraded too. Despite all these new features, Black Watch still retains her sleek, intimate style and has a welcoming ambience - just like the rest of the Fred. Olsen fleet.
