Britain's Love Affair with Gin

header img

When Dutchman, William of Orange, was crowned King of England in 1689, gin production boomed. For a while, it wasn’t regulated properly, so distillers were able to add all sorts of ingredients (some even toxic) and sell it very cheaply, earning it the nickname ‘mothers ruin’. Since the introduction of The Gin Act and a thorough distillation process, this aromatic drink has enjoyed a well-deserved revival.

The more refined, quality gin of the 19th century saw luxuriously furnished gin Palaces pop up, attracting a fashionable crowd and in the 20th century, gin became the staple ingredient for many classic cocktails, including the cosmopolitan and martini.

After a little time away from the lime light, gin is now seeing another rise in popularity. And with the range of flavours available, whether added to a creative cocktail or paired with perfect tonic, it looks like it’s here to stay.

Gin is made in the same way as vodka, but with a base flavour of juniper berries. Other natural flavouring ingredients (known as botanicals) are then added to create the incredible variety that’s on offer today.

Gin Menu Experience
With the exciting launch of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ dedicated Gin Menu earlier this year, guests can now enjoy 18 different varieties of this a popular British tipple, including a traditional Beefeater dry-gin, a distinct Botanist Islay gin or a unique Pinkster’s gin-blend. This tantalising menu is served exclusively at the Marquee Bars across the Fred. Olsen fleet and also features six different tonics, which have been carefully paired with their most suited gin.
