Among the many highlights is Bulgaria’s ‘Little Vienna’, Ruse. One of the most diverse and elegant cities situated on the Danube, Ruse is home to over 300 impressive historical landmarks and monuments, many of which appear of Bulgaria’s National Heritage List. The architectural styles on display here are extensive: Viennese-inspired Baroque, Renaissance, Gothic and Rococo structures seemingly appear at every turn of the city’s busy streets. Ruse is also the gateway to the rock monasteries and ancient caves of the Rusenski Lom Natural Park.

Vidin makes for a rewarding stop on river cruise through Bulgaria’s Danubian Plains too. This ancient town boasts an abundance of historic sites from the ancient Roman, medieval and Ottoman eras, such as the Baba Vida Fortress – one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the country.
