After leaving Montevideo, passing through residential areas, we will be driven 135 kilometres (85 miles) to Punta del Este – a fine beachside resort often referred to as the ‘San Tropez of South America’. On the outskirts of Punta del Este, our first stop is to visit Casapueblo – home and studio of artist Carlos Paez Vilaro. The unique architecture of this gleaming white building is a great attraction for photographers. Built by the artist himself in 1985, this mixture of Spanish – and Moroccan – style architecture sits on a rocky bluff overlooking the ocean. Vilaro’s works are scattered about the maze of rooms, which are approached down some narrow steps.

During this half-day driving tour of elegant Buenos Aires, we will have a chance to see beautiful Palermo – a neighbourhood of parks, gardens, mansions and embassies. The charming old city quarter of San Telmo was a river port neighbourhood, where both the high and humble society once lived and was later repopulated by shiploads of European immigrants who moved into the abandoned mansions. These mansions were subdivided into one or two-bedroom dwellings (‘conventillos’) which still exist in San Telmo today.

Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horseshoe shape over almost two miles of the Iguazu River, Iguazu Falls are the result of a volcanic eruption which left yet another large crack in the earth. Iguazu Falls, called Foz do Iguaça in Brazilian, and Cataratas del Iguazu in Spanish, lie on the Argentina-Brazil border and are an Unesco World Natural Heritage Site. During the rainy season of November to March, the rate of flow of water going over the falls may reach 450,000 cubic feet (12,750 cubic metres) per second.

We board a coach pierside for a sightseeing drive around this bustling frontier town, the capital of the Magallanes Region. We will be taken to the Plaza de Armas, the main square, and to the Cerro la Cruz – a viewpoint of the city, the Magellan Strait, the port and the legendary island of Tierra del Fuego. A visit is made to the Maggiorino Borgatello Museum, founded by the Salesian missionaries, which gives a comprehensive overview of the regional flora and fauna, the habitat of the indigenous people of the region and regional history. (Please note that we must climb a long flight of stairs to reach some of the displays, most explanations are written in Spanish only.)

Leaving Punta Arenas, the route takes us some 65 kilometres (40 miles) north-west into the Patagonian countryside. The drive is across undulating land with just enough low shrubs to offer camouflage to guanacos (which resemble llamas) and rheas (the South American ostrich). The last stretch is on a gravel road past an open-pit coalmine, ranking among the world’s largest coal reserves.

Following a drive of approximately one-and-a-half hours, we set off on our rafting adventure down the clear, azure waters of the Petrohue River. The mighty Petrohue is one of Chile’s most beautiful and exciting glacial rivers, and we will see some spectacular scenery of old-growth forest, waterfalls and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and volcanoes.

Departing the pier we will be taken into the heart of Casablanca Valley. Since 1875 there have been vineyards in Casablanca Valley but only since the 1980’s was the true potential of the valley discovered. It was determined only recently that the soils and the conditions were in many ways similar to the Napa and Sonoma Valleys in California. The valley is oriented in such a way that daily ocean breezes cool the grapes on the vine and result in intensely fruity wines when properly vinified.

Although there have been vineyards in Casablanca Valley since 1875, it was only in the 1980s when the true potential of the valley was realised. Trujillo is one of the most beautiful cities in Peru, founded in 1534 by Peru’s conquistador Francisco Pizarro, who names it after his birthplace in Spain. This colonial and republican city, 560 kilometres (350 miles) north of Lima, flourished when numerous families of nobles settled here to exploit the gold and silver mines, and the large sugar plantations. Trujillo, with its year-round spring-like climate, is full of traditional and aristocratic mansions.

Flanking the square are the Government Palace, where Francisco Pizarro took up residence in 1538. Founded in 1926, in a renovated 1707 mansion, the Larco Herrera Museum contains the biggest private collection of pre-Columbian art that exists in the world and consists of about 45,000 pieces, mainly pottery, that were excavated by Peruvian archaeologist Rafael Larco Hoyle.
