Departing the harbour of Santa Cruz, we pass by the university town of La Laguna and cross one of the finest wine-growing areas on the island to reach Tacoronte and then El Sauzal on the western coast.

The Cape Verde Islands emerged from a colonial culture - aspects of this culture are clearly seen on this tour, from its mixed population, buildings, monuments and traditions. Our drive will give us the opportunity to feel in touch with the nature of the island and the style of its population, across the street markets of the city, and the lunar view of the landscape between the city and Catfish Bay Beach.

After journeying across graceful bridges, we will begin our tour at the splendid Golden Chapel, part of the Convent and Church of Saint Anthony. Its intricate Baroque design, covered in gold leaf, makes it one of the most beautiful and historic examples of religious art in Brazil. The church also houses a variety of religious artefacts.

Our coach leaves the pier for this tour of Rio; it will take us to the historic downtown centre and business district via Rio Branco Avenue. From a privileged viewpoint, we will see modern skyscrapers and broad avenues that contrast with colonial structures and narrow pedestrian malls of downtown. We shall view the Municipal Theatre and Rio Opera House, inaugurated in 1909 with a discreet elegance and rich in neo-classical inspiration; designed as a replica of the Paris Opera House, it is considered the most beautiful opera house in South America. We drive by the new Cathedral, travel along graceful Aterro Parkway to Flamenco Park, and pass the World War II Memorial and Museum of Modern Art.

We can discover the highlights of vibrant and captivating Rio as our tour introduces us to one of the most famous landmarks in the world. Our tour starts with a drive through the downtown commercial district and residential areas en route to Copacabana, Rio’s celebrated curve beach which is backed by skyscraper hotels and apartments.

After leaving Montevideo, passing through residential areas, we will be driven 135 kilometres (85 miles) to Punta del Este – a fine beachside resort often referred to as the ‘San Tropez of South America’. On the outskirts of Punta del Este, our first stop is to visit Casapueblo – home and studio of artist Carlos Paez Vilaro. The unique architecture of this gleaming white building is a great attraction for photographers. Built by the artist himself in 1985, this mixture of Spanish – and Moroccan – style architecture sits on a rocky bluff overlooking the ocean. Vilaro’s works are scattered about the maze of rooms, which are approached down some narrow steps.

Commencing with a short orientation tour of Montevideo, we are then transferred to Estancia La Rabida – a drive of approximately 90 minutes. The owners will welcome us upon our arrival and take us on dray trucks, or traditional old wagons for a ride around the fields, including the three kilometres (one-and-a-half miles) of beaches on the shores of the Rio de la Plata. (Horses are available for those who wish to ride, but this would be at their own risk).

Driving through the fashionable riverside suburbs of Olivos and San Isidro, where time permitting we will make a brief stop to view the beautiful cathedral. We then head to the area known as Tigre – also referred to as ‘the playground of the Portenos’ (as the locals are known). We’ll see the area’s gracious homes and streets lined with wide, elegant weeping willow trees as we head to the centre of town, where locals enjoy the cafés and outdoor restaurants while observing the charlatans and soap-box politicians. We shall enjoy tea and sweet biscuits at one of these cafés.

During this half-day driving tour of elegant Buenos Aires, we will have a chance to see beautiful Palermo – a neighbourhood of parks, gardens, mansions and embassies. The charming old city quarter of San Telmo was a river port neighbourhood, where both the high and humble society once lived and was later repopulated by shiploads of European immigrants who moved into the abandoned mansions. These mansions were subdivided into one or two-bedroom dwellings (‘conventillos’) which still exist in San Telmo today.

Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horseshoe shape over almost two miles of the Iguazu River, Iguazu Falls are the result of a volcanic eruption which left yet another large crack in the earth. Iguazu Falls, called Foz do Iguaça in Brazilian, and Cataratas del Iguazu in Spanish, lie on the Argentina-Brazil border and are an Unesco World Natural Heritage Site. During the rainy season of November to March, the rate of flow of water going over the falls may reach 450,000 cubic feet (12,750 cubic metres) per second.

This is an exclusive opportunity to view Falkland birdlife. We’ll depart from the jetty by minibus and head for the nearby picturesque Hadassa Bay. The journey takes in the fantastic rugged beauty of East Falklands, passing close by a military radar site, Estancia Farm, to the head of Berkeley Sound. En route we will have the opportunity to learn about the historical Port Louis Settlement and the unique stone runs – appearing like rivers of stone running down the mountain, formed by intense frost action.

Beginning our tour we will be transferred to Mini buses for a 30 minute drive by road. We will disembark the coach and experience “off road” driving in a 4x4 vehicle with an experienced local driver. We will be able to glean an insight into the ranch style of Falklands farming, as the route to the Lagoon is working farmland.

Departing early in the morning from Ushuaia, we will take a drive along National Route 3 and then take the "J" route towards Harberton Ranch, the oldest of the region. The 90 km drive until we reach the ranch will offer interesting views of the famous "Flag Trees" (exposed to the strong winds), until the coast of the Lasifashaj River.

We start our day with a breathtaking drive from Ushuaia along the River Olivia Valley, before passing the majestic mountain of the same name.

Departing our ship we will walk approximately 500 metres to join our catamaran for a ride into the Beagle Channel on this custom-made, sightseeing vessel.

PUNTA ARENAS, CHILE

We board a coach pierside for a sightseeing drive around this bustling frontier town, the capital of the Magallanes Region. We will be taken to the Plaza de Armas, the main square, and to the Cerro la Cruz – a viewpoint of the city, the Magellan Strait, the port and the legendary island of Tierra del Fuego. A visit is made to the Maggiorino Borgatello Museum, founded by the Salesian missionaries, which gives a comprehensive overview of the regional flora and fauna, the habitat of the indigenous people of the region and regional history. (Please note that we must climb a long flight of stairs to reach some of the displays, most explanations are written in Spanish only.)

PUNTA ARENAS, CHILE

Leaving Punta Arenas, the route takes us some 65 kilometres (40 miles) north-west into the Patagonian countryside. The drive is across undulating land with just enough low shrubs to offer camouflage to guanacos (which resemble llamas) and rheas (the South American ostrich). The last stretch is on a gravel road past an open-pit coalmine, ranking among the world’s largest coal reserves.

On this tour we can discover the charm of the southerly city of Punta Arenas situated by the Strait of Magellan, and be introduced to the main points of interest. While there are sights and attractions to be seen around town, the major highlights are found in the rugged, scenic beautiful outside Punta Arenas.

The Lake District, of which Puerto Montt is the capital, is one of the most spectacular areas of Chile. Hundreds of picturesque lakes and dozens of volcanoes dot the landscape.

On this tour we will visit an area where lakes, woods and volcanos are common, and Osorno Volcano can be seen from as far as 20 miles south of Puerto Montt and up to the town of Osorno, some 150 miles to the north. We will see Puerto Varas, the City of Roses, at Lago Llanquihue and skirt the southern shores of the lake to the village of Ensenada, situated next to the wild Petrohúe River Rapids – a symphony of colour, sound and nature.

Departing from the pier we will travel north to Chile’s famous Lake District en route to the majestic Osorno volcano, which reaches 2,652 metres above sea level. The first platform of the canopy is located on the slopes of this volcano.

Following a drive of approximately one-and-a-half hours, we set off on our rafting adventure down the clear, azure waters of the Petrohue River. The mighty Petrohue is one of Chile’s most beautiful and exciting glacial rivers, and we will see some spectacular scenery of old-growth forest, waterfalls and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and volcanoes.

Departing the pier we will be taken into the heart of Casablanca Valley. Since 1875 there have been vineyards in Casablanca Valley but only since the 1980’s was the true potential of the valley discovered. It was determined only recently that the soils and the conditions were in many ways similar to the Napa and Sonoma Valleys in California. The valley is oriented in such a way that daily ocean breezes cool the grapes on the vine and result in intensely fruity wines when properly vinified.

For those of us who wish to explore the city with a knowledgeable guide, and discover Valparaiso more intimately, this tour has been designed with us in mind. We will familiarise ourselves with the hilly old part of Valparaiso, as well as the impressive downtown section. We will also see some of the amazing ‘ascensores’ (funiculars - elevators), and be transported on them.

Our coach will take us into the heart of Casablanca Valley. Although there have been vineyards in Casablanca Valley since 1875, it was only in the 1980s when the true potential of the valley was realised. It was discovered that the soil and the conditions closely mirrored those of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys in California. We will visit one of the wineries in this valley, to see the wine-making process and taste some of the produce. It will be possible to purchase some locally produced wine.

Our drive from Valparaiso to Santiago, Chile’s capital, will be an approximate two-hour journey that crosses the Central Valley and the coastal range. Upon arrival in Santiago we will commence a city tour that includes the most important historic and modern highlights, including La Moneda (the Presidential Palace).

Arica is a city of commercial and cultural mixtures resulting from its close proximity to Peru and Bolivia. It is the main shipping port for Bolivia and for the Peruvian City of Tacna. It is the only port in the desert area with water and vegetation. Roads and railways link Arica to both countries.

Departing from the pier we will take our coach and travel south to Codpa Village. on route we will go through the Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world. We will make a stop to see Presencias Tutelares Sculptures – giant sculptures by Chilean sculptor, Juan Díaz Fleming.

Arica is the northernmost city of Chile, which through history, has had commercial and cultural exchanges with the high plateau peoples of Peru and Bolivia. For almost 10,000 years, Man has inhabited this land, framed by the driest desert in the world – the Atacama.

On this excursion we can enjoy a visit to one of Peru’s largest private collections, amassed over a lifetime by the late diplomat Miguel Mujica Gallo.

Trujillo is one of the most beautiful cities in Peru, founded in 1534 by Peru’s conquistador Francisco Pizarro, who names it after his birthplace in Spain. This colonial and republican city, 560 kilometres (350 miles) north of Lima, flourished when numerous families of nobles settled here to exploit the gold and silver mines, and the large sugar plantations. Trujillo, with its year-round spring-like climate, is full of traditional and aristocratic mansions.

From the pier we will travel to Plaza Mayor, the main square, where we can appreciate the majestic colonial architecture. Flanking the square are the Government Palace, where Francisco Pizarro took up residence in 1538. The Cathedral, which houses Pizarro’s remains and where we will visit the on-site museum; the Archbishop’s Palace, with its beautiful balconies; and the Town Hall.

Starting out from Callao port we will board our coach and taken through the centre of Lima where we will see the Government Palace, the cathedral and the old colonial section to view the lights of Plaza Mayor and other main plazas.

CALLAO, PERU

Founded in 1926, in a renovated 1707 mansion, the Larco Herrera Museum contains the biggest private collection of pre-Columbian art that exists in the world and consists of about 45,000 pieces, mainly pottery, that were excavated by Peruvian archaeologist Rafael Larco Hoyle.
