BERGEN, NORWAY
Our excursion to the Hardangerfjord – one of Norway’s most popular fjords, with beautiful fruit orchards lining the sides and reflections of the magnificent mountains on the crystal clear water – begins at the pier in Bergen, when we board our coach.
ALESUND, NORWAY
Our local guide will take us very close, in good weather as close as just a few metres from the rock. We should see large groups of puffins and plenty of kittiwakes. The puffins, easily recognisable by their colourful bill, nest in holes in the rock.
ALESUND, NORWAY
From Giske we drive to the island of Godøy, with the pretty fishing village of Alnes facing the Atlantic Ocean. We take a short break at the Alnes Lighthouse and refreshments will be served in the nearby café.
ALESUND, NORWAY
This tour shows us parts of the splendid town and takes us to the breathtaking viewpoint on Mount Aksla, for the best panoramic view of this spectacular scenery. We will also enjoy a drive along the Borgundfjord, through the suburbs, to the bustling old trading centre of Borgund, site of the Sunnmøre Museum.
BERGEN, NORWAY
Surrounded by seven mountains, a short distance from the country’s wildest and scenic fjords – encapsulating the best that Mother Nature has to offer – Bergen is Fjord Norway’s capital.
BERGEN, NORWAY
Passing the city park and lake, our tour continues south through Bergen’s attractive suburbs. On Nordås Lake we can see the royal residence, ‘Gamlehaugen’. Fana Mountain offers us a superb view, though only 230 metres (755 feet) above sea level.
BERGEN, NORWAY
As we explore the modest house, we will wonder at the significance of the notes that once filled these rooms. The walls whisper stories of melodies that sprang from the heart and hands of an incredibly talented man.
FLAM, NORWAY
We wind our way up to the Hardangervidda Mountain plateau through several tunnels, over bridges and past thundering waterfalls. Narrow paths twist up the mountainsides, used by only the deftest goats, and beautiful vistas of the valley unfold below. At Myrdal, we change trains and head to Voss.
BERGEN, NORWAY
Our tour will show us how the way people live in this part of Norway has changed dramatically during the last century. We will see this change vividly evident throughout the beautiful outskirts of Bergen in the fjord, lake and coastal districts.
HARSTAD, NORWAY
Harstad, referred to as the ‘Cultural Town in the North’, is situated on Norway’s largest island, Hinnøya. We will enjoy some sightseeing around the centre, and a stop at the viewpoint above the town, before we visit Trondenes Church.
OLDEN, NORWAY
We shall join the 10 metre (30 feet) boat Isabella, chartered especially for us today, directly from our ship. Our experienced local skipper will steer our course on a short cruise to the bottom of the fjord arm at Loen, to one of the best fishing spots.
HONNINGSVAG, NORWAY
The course taken will be suited to the day’s weather.During this tour we will experience distinctive sub-arctic nature, bird life, historic sights, abandoned fishing communities, a lighthouse and, with luck, we might spot seals or a whale, possibly even a majestic white-tailed eagle.
LONGYEARBYEN, NORWAY
This tour in and around Longyearbyen will include the Svalbard Museum and the sled dog kennels. Our local guide will take us on a fascinating trip through Svalbard’s history, geology, its flora and fauna, as well as today’s society.
LONGYEARBYEN, NORWAY
We will be picked up by minivan at the pier. Outside the town, where the road ends, we begin the walk through a big moraine landscape leading up to the Longyear Glacier. On the way we will stop to look for 60 million year old plant fossils, which we may take home.
TROMSO, NORWAY
Our sightseeing tour of the city starts from the pier, passing the campus of the northernmost university in the world, and the Planetarium – resembling a rocket launch pad! We make our way to the Tromsø Museum for a look at the interesting zoological, geological and ethnological exhibitions
TROMSO, NORWAY
Leaving the pier, our tour of this interesting area starts in the centre – a charming blend of old and new, with modest wooden houses set next to contemporary architecture. We pass Tromsø Church, one of the largest wooden churches in the north, before we head off around the island.
TROMSO, NORWAY
This tour takes us to the environment centre, Polaria. The exterior alone is fascinating; the building resembles huge blocks of ice thrown together. Inside, various exhibitions present polar areas and the Barents region, and we will be shown a spectacular widescreen film
TROMSO, NORWAY
The Tromsø Wilderness Centre is located approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the city. Here we will enjoy an exciting programme of events including a chance to meet some of the 130 huskies.
ULVIK, NORWAY
This tour is for those of us searching for a dramatic way to view the utterly amazing fjordland scenery. Characterised as ‘Norway’s fruit garden’, the village of Ulvik is a well known tourist centre.
