Walking Tour of Vale Paraiso

This tour allows us to discover the natural beauty of the island. We begin from Vale Paraiso, where we will walk along the levada – a traditional manmade irrigation system ideal for walkers. The first levadas date back to the 15th century, and were constructed by workers who were often suspended from baskets carving through sheer cliff faces. The whole network is approximately 100 kilometres (62 miles) long. Some people believe that parts of the network were in place before any kind of road system.

Our next visit is to Eira do Serrado, where the viewpoint 1,094 metres (3,500 feet) high overlooks the valley of Curral das Freiras (the Nun’s Valley) – a settlement that grew after the 16th century, when Madeira was attacked by French pirates. -

Departing from the pier we shall travel to the belvedere of Eira do Serrado, where we will be invited to gaze upon the Curral das Freiras Valley (Nun’s Valley). After viewing the 1917 Peace Monument, we then travel to Pico do Areeiro, the second highest peak on the island, at 1,810 metres (5,940 feet), with impressive gorges, deep valleys, grandiose mountains and imposing cliffs. -

Machico, Santo da Serra and Camacha

Departing from the pier we will take the highway to the village of Machico, probably the most historically interesting town on the island. Machico was the landing point of the first discoverers of Madeira and therefore we will find some beautiful old buildings including the oldest church on the island. “Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres” was built in 1425 and has some beautiful paintings and tile works inside. The baroque table is sculpted in golden wood and sits in the main chapel – the most interesting 17th century object. Machico also has a romantic history if we believe in legends. The legend says that two lovers, Machim and d’Arfet, ran away from England for love and came ashore here after a storm that wrecked their ship.

A visit to the shrine of St James (Santiago), Patron Saint of Spain, entitles us to wear the cockleshell emblem in the company of perhaps half a million pilgrims a year. -

Known locally as the ARG, the ground became cricket’s 52nd Test Venue in 1980/1 when it hosted England in a test match marked by a century from the island’s most famous sporting son, Sir Vivian Richards. Despite the relatively small size of Antigua, with just a population of approximately 70,000, crowds at the ARG are both extremely knowledgeable and fanatical in their passion for the most famous of the Caribbean sports! -
