The Caroni Nature Sanctuary is a mangrove swamp covering an area of 105 square kilometres (40 square miles) on Trinidad’s northwest coast. Legend has it that the ‘White Witch’ Annie Palmer murdered her three husbands and numerous slaves who worked the surrounding plantation, before she in turn was murdered, in 1831, by one of her lovers – a cunning slave who decided to exact revenge on her.
