The Fire Mountains

Departing the quayside, we head south-west, passing the picturesque villages of Uga and Yaiza, before taking a camel ride along the outskirts of the National Park of Timanfaya, more commonly known as the Fire Mountains. The camels will take us for an approximate 30-minute ride (optional) along the coloured hills of the volcanic mountains.

Goree Island

Approximately two miles off Dakar is Goree Island, a small piece of continent thrown into the ocean. Goree Island was the first white settlement in West Africa, and for over 300 years was the most important slave transit point. From here, over 20 million Africans were transported to the ‘New World’. Declared a World Heritage Site, its red or yellow colonial houses vividly recall the past centuries.

Porto Moniz

After crossing Paul da Serra, we reach Porto Moniz – the most northwesterly point of the island and possibly the most spectacular – which is well known for its volcanic swimming pools. -
Walking Tour of Vale Paraiso

This tour allows us to discover the natural beauty of the island. We begin from Vale Paraiso, where we will walk along the levada – a traditional manmade irrigation system ideal for walkers. The first levadas date back to the 15th century, and were constructed by workers who were often suspended from baskets carving through sheer cliff faces. The whole network is approximately 100 kilometres (62 miles) long. Some people believe that parts of the network were in place before any kind of road system.

Eira Do Serrado & Afternoon Tea

Our next visit is to Eira do Serrado, where the viewpoint 1,094 metres (3,500 feet) high overlooks the valley of Curral das Freiras (the Nun’s Valley) – a settlement that grew after the 16th century, when Madeira was attacked by French pirates. -

Departing from the pier we shall travel to the belvedere of Eira do Serrado, where we will be invited to gaze upon the Curral das Freiras Valley (Nun’s Valley). It is located within a deep valley which has one of the island’s most spectacular landscapes, where dizzying views will take our breath away. -
Pico Do Aeeiro & Camacha

After viewing the 1917 Peace Monument, we then travel to Pico do Areeiro, the second highest peak on the island, at 1,810 metres (5,940 feet), with impressive gorges, deep valleys, grandiose mountains and imposing cliffs. -

Machico, Santo da Serra and Camacha

Departing from the pier we will take the highway to the village of Machico, probably the most historically interesting town on the island. Machico was the landing point of the first discoverers of Madeira and therefore we will find some beautiful old buildings including the oldest church on the island. “Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres” was built in 1425 and has some beautiful paintings and tile works inside. The baroque table is sculpted in golden wood and sits in the main chapel – the most interesting 17th century object. Machico also has a romantic history if we believe in legends. The legend says that two lovers, Machim and d’Arfet, ran away from England for love and came ashore here after a storm that wrecked their ship.

Leaving the pier by jeep our tour will take us inland to one of the most beautiful forests areas of the island, passing through typical streets which are mainly used to transport agricultural goods that supply the population living in these rural areas.
