Departing from the quayside we shall be driven to the Antigua Recreation ground, home of four existing cricket world records, for a guided tour of the ground. The ground, known locally as the ARG, became cricket’s 52nd Test venue in 1980-81 when it hosted England in a test match marked by a century from the island’s most famous sporting son, Sir Vivian Richards.

From the pier we will board our awaiting coach to begin our panoramic tour, passing by the Gardens of Los Cantones which was built on reclaimed land. As we pass we must watch for the “galleries” – houses whose windows reflect sunlight and whose façades were built by fishermen out of wood and glass.

Departing from the pier, we will head towards the famous village of Betanzos, the Roman village that emerged from Old Castros. Betanzos contains wonderful examples of medieval architecture, with various houses bearing coats of arms, the ‘fishing quarter’ also makes it a delightful village to visit.

From the pier in Ponta Delgada, we head north-east along pleasant roads bordering agricultural areas stretching across the island to the small town of Ribeira Grande. Ribeira Grande is the oldest town on the north coast and it has a Portuguese feeling – we will see this in the house facades and verandahs.

After departing Ponta Delgada, we will proceed to one of the main Pineapple Plantations, where the system of cultivating and marketing this fruit will be explained. Here we will be able to sample a pineapple liqueur.

Leaving Ponta Delgada by way of the coastal road, we pass through a number of picturesque villages before arriving at Feteiras. From here the route ascends towards Sete Cidades and the main crater of this extinct volcano, some 575 metres (1,900 feet) above sea level.
